Summary

Joseph A. Altsheler wrote 8 volumes of fiction that covered the service of Confederate soldier Harry Kenton and his friends, as well as Union soldier Dick Mason, as they take part in various battles of the Civil War. Altsheler’s books have been historically popular amoung young readers and adults alike. This volume covers the Battle of the Wilderness, the first major battle of Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign against Robert E. Lee. Lee was able to hold off Grant’s attacks at Chickamauga, but the tactical stalemate merely meant the campaign would continue to Spotsylvania Court House and towards Richmond.

Mary Shelley's 1818 novel presents the Faustian story of a man who aspires to create life out of death, with disastrous results. The novel is constructed as a series of first-person narratives, delivered by Captain Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and his Creature, which makes it perfect for a dramatic reading presented by actor author Geoffrey Giuliano. This story was inspired by a remark of Mark Twain's to the effect that it was a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end. By trying the experiment upon only one man in a perfectly normal world I have scarcely given his idea a fair trial. Several weeks after completing it, I discovered an almost identical plot in Samuel Butler's "Note-books."

No one - fictional or factual - embodies the Jazz age as completely as F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby. First published in 1925, this legendary novel continues to enthrall generations as it serves as a lens to view our not-so-distant past. Many of our notions about that period are taken from the pages of this book. Bathtub gin, flappers, and house parties that last all week enliven Fitzgerald's classic tale. Stylish and engaging, The Great Gatsby is also a startling literate portrait of Gatsby's search for meaning in his opulent world. With his sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism, Fitzgerald stands out as one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. Frank Muller's timeless interpretation enhances the imagery of Gatsby's stylish and unfulfilling world with brilliance and insight beyond the printed word.
