Summary

A Golden Age mystery featuring a sleuthing small-town doctor who’s out of his depth as a killer haunts a waning New England summer.   On vacation with his daughter on the New England coast, Dr. Hugh Westlake is enjoying the sun, the sea, and the fishing. Being September, the inn where they’re staying is almost empty, except for a few other guests. But the peace is shattered when a woman’s body is found strangled on the beach, with a red circle drawn around a mole on her face.   The morbid scene becomes more so when she’s identified as the governess of a family staying at the inn. Hugh gets drafted by local law enforcement to help with the investigation. He uncovers dysfunctional parents, a creepy mortician, a handsome lifeguard, and a woman painter—all with secrets to hide. Not to mention local legends. When another woman is murdered, with another mole circled, Hugh realizes there’s a madman on the loose. And he must tie up the loose ends of crimes past and present to net a most diabolical killer.  “Stagge has packed some excellent reading between the opening and closing chapters.” —Chicago Sun  “An exciting and grisly yarn.” —New York Herald Tribune  “A fine entry in one of the better American amateur detective novel series.” —Pretty Sinister Books  “One of the year’s supreme morsels. It has everything the exemplary detective story should possess.” —Worcester Telegram

A young gentleman named John Openshaw visits Holmes one night with a strange story. His uncle Elias had emigrated to the United States as a young man, establishing himself as a planter in Florida and joining the Confederate States Army, in which he rose to the rank of colonel. In 1869 or 1870, he returned to England and purchased an estate near Horsham in Sussex, adopting a reclusive lifestyle. He later allowed John to live on the estate and gave him full access to the property, except for one storage room that was always kept locked. On 10 March 1883, Elias received a letter postmarked Pondicherry, bearing the inscription "K.K.K." and containing only five orange pips (seeds). What happens after that you will need to listen to find out.

A Renaissance fair in rural Louisiana is not the kind of place you'd expect to encounter any real danger. All the dragons, jousting, sword fighting, and public executions are only make believe, right? Our favorite lettering artist, Mila Breaux, is not so sure about that. When she receives a mysterious note summoning her to hand letter the signage for the local Ren fair, some of the Dark Age performances seem to be way more realistic than she bargained for.Particularly when it comes to the trial and capital punishment of a young woman: the head artisan of the Ren fair's crafting guild.Joined by her trusty friend, Cherie Mamou, a Cajun girl who claims to talk to animals, Mila will need to get to the bottom of what is rotten in the kingdom. And she'll need to do it while steering clear of crooked royalty, fearsome knights, trained peregrine falcons, and a dime-store Shakespeare impersonator who may want to see the girls tarred and feathered! Together, Cherie and Mila seek the truth about the artisan's "mock" execution, and are met at every turn with fierce resistance. Can they figure out the mystery before it is too late, or will they fall victim to the brutality of Medieval times?

BOOK 1 of 3 in the DEMON GORGE TRILOGY
“Samuel Knight’s body was stolen from the house,” the policeman said in an awe-inspiring tone.
“Samuel Knight’s body was stolen! Impossible!” Jackson replied.
“Yes. You didn’t hear of it?”
“Hear of it?” Jackson echoed. “No! I haven’t heard of it whatsoever. I can’t believe it. God, Samuel’s body, was stolen. It sounds impossible to me. Do you have any clue who stole it?”
“We don’t know. It was lying in state in the living room at the home, awaiting the undertaker to pick it up.”
    “Wasn’t the body watched?”
“No. Why should it be watched? Who would have supposed for one single minute someone would come and steal the body?”
“We don’t have any idea. Tim Collins, the undertaker, arrived this morning and found the body gone. One of the windows was open in the room, and Doctor Clair was the only one with a key.”
“Any theories on who might have done something like that?”
“The Chief thinks someone hid under the table with a big cloth hanging to the floor draped over it. So, someone hid under the cloth until all was quiet and the door locked and then came out, stole the body, and went out the window.”
“I’ve never heard of anything like this in all my life,” exclaimed Jackson.
