Summary

Innovation is the lifeblood of growing businesses. Indeed, it is difficult to sustain business growth without innovation. Innovation may take many forms: technical advances, new products or manufacturing processes, new applications of established products, new channels to market, new marketing techniques based on social media, or the development of unexploited markets.
In commercial terms, the end product of innovation is intellectual property (IP) which can be packaged with copyright, registered with a unique trademark and then patented.
The aim of Growing Business Innovation is to take the directors and corporate officers of success-driven businesses with defined innovation objectives on the journey from research to marketable product, to creating, managing and onwards to marketing and monetisation of their innovation’s IP.

What Only the CEO Can Do

What Only the CEO Can Do?This Harvard Business Review (HBR) article describes and focuses on the unique tasks only a CEO can perform. The core elements of this article were created by Peter Drucker. They were then updated and further refined by former P & G CEO, Arthur Lafley. This article and our corresponding Harvard Thoughts audio book define the importance of the CEO focusing his or her organization first on the most meaningful outsider, the customer. Then Drucker addresses the concept of What Business are You In (also see our HBR based audio book,What Business are You In? by Ted Levitt) and how this is a task only the CEO can perform. The CEO must identify the organization’s core competencies and shed the non-core ones. Lafley describes how he did this at P & G with Peter Drucker’s assistance by focusing on core brands for P & G to be more nimble in their marketing efforts and by spinning off secondary ones to companies such as Smuckers who added these brands to their core product lines. P & G also benefited financially from this refocusing by becoming a major Smuckers’ shareholder. Drucker then emphasized the second key CEO task, balancing short term against long term needs to earn sufficient present income to support investments for the future to sustain and grow the company over extended periods of time. And finally they stated that the third key CEO task was to establish clear values and core standards in an organization. They emphasized this meant the CEO must make sure these are completed understood and internalized throughout the organization, from top to bottom. So to say a generalist is a utility person. It is, of course, literarily generalized from a layman's point of view. But technically speaking, it is a term that draws quite a substance and is construed to be a person of versatility, whose wisdom knows no barriers regardless of the legitimacy of the subjects. Here, supremacy over the subjects is least concerned. On the other hand, a specialist can be viewed in terms of division of labor. Jobs can be allocated to different persons according to their skills and merits. Resultantly, the specialist is confined to a particular occupation and effectively discharges the role assigned to the entire satisfaction of a specific domain of stakeholders. A specialist is supposed to be highly proficient in his defined field of action and tries to accomplish the slice of work entrusted to him. It is worth mentioning here that a specialist’s task is pre ascertained and the duties and responsibilities are undergone in keeping with the fixed norms and prescribed time frame.
