Summary

'I proudly wear my badge as a Covid-19 front-line hero. I believe I was meant to be where I am during these trying times.'
Our nurses have witnessed the pandemic first hand, compassionately caring for patients amid war-like circumstances.
The havoc caused by the pandemic highlighted existing fault lines in the South African health system, and nurses faced shortages of staff and vital life-saving equipment. Colleagues tested positive and died. Visitors were not allowed, so nurses had to be intermediaries between patients and desperate family trying to glean information on the phone. Despite these pressures, they remained at the forefront of the fight against the deadly virus.
This book brings together deeply personal stories of caring for patients in wards and ICU, of feeling overwhelmed, and experiencing the fear of getting infected and passing Covid on to their families. There are also moving tales of personal growth and finding renewed purpose. In Our Own Words shows the extreme resilience of nurses – even in the face of adversity. And that at the core of a 'true' nurse remains the commitment to the patient.
'A powerful and moving account from the coalface of the Covid-19 response – this is a must read!' – Salim Abdool Karim

A field scientist and conservationist tracks the elusive Blakiston's Fish Owl in the forbidding reaches of eastern RussiaWhen he was just a fledgling birdwatcher, Jonathan C. Slaght had a chance encounter with one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. Bigger than any owl he knew, it looked like a small bear with decorative feathers. He snapped a quick photo and shared it with experts. Soon he was on a five-year journey, searching for this enormous, enigmatic creature in the lush, remote forests of eastern Russia. That first sighting set his calling as a scientist.Despite a wingspan of six feet and a height of over two feet, the Blakiston's fish owl is highly elusive. They are easiest to find in winter, when their tracks mark the snowy banks of the rivers where they feed. They are also endangered. And so, as Slaght and his devoted team set out to locate the owls, they aim to craft a conservation plan that helps ensure the species' survival. This quest sends them on all-night monitoring missions in freezing tents, mad dashes across thawing rivers, and free-climbs up rotting trees to check nests for precious eggs. At the heart of Slaght's story are the fish owls themselves: cunning hunters, devoted parents, singers of eerie duets, and survivors in a harsh and shrinking habitat.

When Columbia professor Dickson Despommier set out to solve America's food, water, and energy crises, he didn't just think big-he thought up. Despommier's stroke of genius, the vertical farm, has excited scientists, architects, and politicians around the globe. These farms, grown inside skyscrapers, would provide solutions to many of the serious problems we currently face, including:-Allowing year-round crop production-Providing food to areas currently lacking arable land-Immunity to weather-related crop failure-Reuse of water collected by dehumidification of the indoor environment-New employment opportunities-No use of pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides-Drastically reduced dependence on fossil fuels-No crop loss due to shipping or storage-No agricultural runoff-And many moreVertical farming can be located on abandoned city properties, creating new urban revenue streams. They will employ lots of skilled and unskilled labor. They can be run on wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy. They can be used to grow plants for pharmaceutical purposes or for converting gray water back into drinking water. In the tradition of the bestselling The World Without Us, this is a totally original landmark work destined to become a classic. With stunning illustrations and clear and entertaining writing, this book will appeal to anyone concerned about America's future.

Here’s why getting your CompTIA A+ alone won’t get you a job in IT.
If you want to figure out how you can use this knowledge to your advantage — before spending all your time and money preparing for the exam — then start by asking yourself this.
If you were hiring for someone to join your IT department, do you know what you’d look for in a candidate?
Would you give someone a job simply based on whether they had just one certificate?
Wouldn’t you want to see if they could actually handle the job you’re hiring them for before making an offer?
Despite what you may have heard about switching careers into IT… getting your A+ will only get you so far.
In fact, it might not get you anywhere — at least, not anywhere close to the kind of job offer you want.
There are over 1 million IT professionals with A+ certifications, according to CompTIA.
Which means if you want to stand out from all the other candidates you’re competing with… and make it hard for employers to say “no” to you… then passing your A+ exam isn’t going to be enough.
So instead of helping recruiters fill their quotas… and stressing out over not having found a job months after the exam… you can turn your A+ certification into a bargaining chip that helps you fast-track your transition into IT.
And that’s what makes this book different from all the other A+ study guides out there. On top of showing you how to ace the exam with ease, it also offers tips on what to do after you’ve earned your certification.
Even if you have no prior IT experience, there are still plenty of ways getting CompTIA A+ certified can help you launch a long-term career — and one that actually pays off.
So if you’re done working dead-end jobs… and want to make sure you get the most out of your A+ certification…then this is your book.

    Introduction to Power System...

Power system protection systems have three basic components: Instrument transformers, Relays, Circuit breakers

The function of the CT is to reproduce in its secondary winding a current I' that is proportional to the primary current I. The CT converts primary currents in the kiloamp range to secondary currents in the 0–5 ampere range for convenience of measurement.

The function of the relay is to discriminate between normal operation and fault conditions. The OC relay in Figure 2 has an operating coil, which is connected to the CT secondary winding, and a set of contacts. When |I'| exceeds a specified ''pickup'' value, the operating coil causes the normally open contacts to close. When the relay contacts close, the trip coil of the circuit breaker is energized, which then causes the circuit breaker to open.

System-protection components have the following design criteria:
    • Reliability: Operate dependably when fault conditions occur, even after remaining idle for months or years. Failure to do so may result in costly damages.
    • Selectivity: Avoid unnecessary, false trips.
    • Speed: Operate rapidly to minimize fault duration and equipment damage. Any intentional time delays should be precise.
    • Economy: Provide maximum protection at minimum cost.
    • Simplicity: Minimize protection equipment and circuitry.

Since it is impossible to satisfy all these criteria simultaneously, compromises must be made in system protection.

The book consists from the following sections:
    1. Chapter 1: Power System Faults:
    2. Chapter 2: Instrument Transformers.
    3. Chapter 3: Overcurrent and Earth Fault Protection Relays.
    4. Chapter 4: Radial System Protection.
    5. Chapter 5: Zones of Protection.
    6. Chapter 6: Differential Relays.
    7. Chapter 7: Distance Relays.
    8. Chapter 8: Transformer Protection.
    9. Chapter 9: Generator Protection.
    10. Chapter 10: Busbar Protection.
    11. Chapter 11: Circuit Breakers.
    12. Chapter 12: Fuses.
    13. Chapter 13: References.

The “heartbreaking . . . deeply-moving” story of the heroic crusade to save Puerto Rico’s stray dogs, and an impassioned appeal to help all animals in need (Daily Mail).

Looking for inspiration and adventure in their lives, Steve McGarva and his wife Pam moved to Puerto Rico. While kite surfing at Playa Lucia, Steve made a shocking discovery—a sick and abandoned dog—that would transform his life. With its shimmering white sand, palm trees, and dazzling azure water, the beach looked postcard perfect. But its beauty hid a dark side: To the locals, this slice of paradise was known as Dead Dog Beach—a notorious dumping ground for the island’s unwanted canines.

Considered a threat to the area’s lucrative tourism industry, these defenseless animals were in constant danger of brutality and death. Enraged, and refusing to accept such cruelty, McGarva began protecting these helpless animals—actions that would jeopardize his marriage, challenge his sanity, and make him a target of locals determined to stop him.
