Summary

Housing Supply Limits examines how zoning restrictions and building constraints contribute to skyrocketing housing prices and limited availability. It explores the economic and political factors that artificially limit housing supply, impacting individuals, families, and the broader economy.

Did you know that single-family zoning, often rooted in historical planning, can inadvertently stifle innovation, limiting housing options? Or that lengthy permitting processes significantly delay housing development, adding costs and exacerbating existing shortages?

The book progresses from fundamental economic principles to dissecting zoning regulations and building constraints. It analyzes the economic consequences of these restrictions, such as wealth inequality, and then explores potential policy solutions.

By using real-world examples and data-driven assessments, the book argues that reforming these policies is essential for increasing housing supply and promoting economic opportunity. It explains the impact of density restrictions and height limits on housing affordability.

Ultimately, Housing Supply Limits offers a balanced analysis of a complex issue, making it a valuable resource for policymakers, urban planners, real estate professionals, and concerned citizens seeking to understand and address the housing crisis. The book's approach, blending economic modeling, case studies, and legal analysis, provides a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between housing supply, housing affordability, and public policy.

Inviting new translations of classical Buddhist texts about why the self is an illusion—and why giving it up can free us from suffering

From self-realization and self-promotion to self-help and the selfie, the modern world encourages us to be self-obsessed. We are even told that finding ourselves is the key to happiness. Better to lose yourself! More than 2,500 years ago, the Buddha argued that the self is an illusion—and that our belief in it is the cause of most, if not all, of our suffering. How to Lose Yourself presents lively, accessible, and expert new translations of ancient Buddhist writings about the central, unique, and powerful Buddhist teaching of "no-self."

Drawn from three important Buddhist traditions, these essential Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese writings provide a rich sampling of the ways Buddhist philosophers have understood the idea that we are selfless persons—and why this insight is so therapeutic. When we let go of the self, we are awakened to the presence of all things as they truly are, and we let go of the anxiety, fear, greed, and hatred that are the source of all suffering.

How did India become the country that produced one of the earliest advanced civilisations with the Indus civilisation, experienced a magnificent epoch under the Mughal Empire, was exploited under British colonial rule and today helps shape world politics as a voice of the developing countries? This audiobook shows why India is one of the most fascinating countries of the present day.

Bert Alexander Petzold takes listeners on a journey through the history of India. Anyone wishing to understand this country's political, religious, cultural and economic development will find here access to a world of diversity and historical depth.

As early as around 2500 BC, the Indus civilisation emerged as one of humanity's earliest advanced civilisations. Carefully planned cities, trade, craftsmanship and urban order testify to an astonishing power of development. When Indo-Aryan tribes migrated from Central Asia around 1500 BC, the Vedic Age began, giving rise to religious traditions, social structures and the caste system.

In the sixth century BC, Buddhism and Jainism emerged as significant reform movements whose influence extended far beyond India. Under Emperor Ashoka, the Maurya Empire united large parts of the subcontinent. Later, under the Gupta dynasty, India experienced a golden age in which art, science, mathematics and trade reached a remarkable height.

From the twelfth century onwards, Islam spread across the subcontinent, and with the Delhi Sultanate a new phase of state formation began. In the sixteenth century, the powerful Mughal Empire arose, reaching a cultural high point of world-historical significance under rulers such as Akbar and Shah Jahan. Buildings such as the "Taj Mahal" became symbols of an era in which power, art and architecture merged.

In the eighteenth century, British colonialism became ever more deeply entrenched and led in 1858 to direct control by the British Crown. From economic exploitation, political oppression and growing resistance emerged an impressive freedom movement. Under Mahatma Gandhi, the non-violent struggle for independence gained world-historical significance. With the partition into India and Pakistan in 1947, a new chapter began, whose effects continue to be felt today in the conflict over Kashmir.

After the Second World War, Jawaharlal Nehru shaped the independent state into a democratic republic. India remained a key political power under Indira Gandhi as well. Since the 1990s, the reforms under P. V. Narasimha Rao have accelerated economic growth, technological modernisation and the country's rise as a high-tech location. Today, India is the world's largest democracy, a spacefaring nation, a leading exporter of IT services, a major producer of food and textiles and an important voice among the emerging developing countries.

Bert Alexander Petzold combines historical precision with vivid presentation. The audiobook places turning points in context, explains connections and shows how early advanced civilisations, religious reform movements, great empires, colonial foreign rule, the struggle for freedom and a democratic new beginning gave rise to a state of global weight. It is ideally suited to preparation for examinations leading to a higher education entrance qualification and for study at university.

Anyone wishing to understand India not merely as a distant great power, but in its historical depth, will discover in this audiobook a country of advanced civilisations, religions, empires, struggles for freedom and visions of the future. Discover India as the origin of great intellectual traditions, as a stage for profound upheavals and as a dynamic force of the present. Secure this audiobook and experience how India connects past and present.

A uniquely successful approach to overcoming anxiety, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and self-sabotage.Almost every rider has felt fear at some point while working with a horse. Fear is a normal reaction to a frightening situation, and as long as the emotion subsides, it isn’t necessarily a problem. However, when apprehension starts to monopolize our thoughts while in the saddle, and when our interactions with our horses are dominated by panic or dread, we need to make a change. But what if the fear doesn’t want to go away, but you really don’t want to give up your relationship with horses?Certified hypnotist Nicole Weber aims to give you unique tools to successfully manage the kind of fear that negatively impacts the pleasure you get from horses and riding. Her goal is to enable you to enjoy your partnership with your horse. It is not that you will never feel fear again if you use her techniques, because in situations that are actually dangerous, you should still feel fear. It is just that you will be able to control the emotion when you are truly safe, but your brain is telling you a different story.Weber begins by covering the theory around fear and how it takes hold of us―how fears arise, what causes them, and why horses mirror our emotions. Then she provides everything listeners need to know to empower themselves to turn away from fear and toward enjoying their horse life. These safe, effective lessons can change not only the way you manage riding, but the way you manage your life outside the barn, too.No matter how long your fear has existed or how old you are, Equihypnosis can liberate you from confining beliefs for good. This surprisingly practical, confidence-inspiring audiobook is for every horse person who wants to make sure she never misses a minute of barn time or a day in the saddle.
