Summary

The Countryman Sets Forth Again is a wonderful compilation of articles covering a range of eclectic rural and countryside subjects. There is something for everyone to discover from the ancient language of field sports to the treasures to be found in old barns; the history of the landscape to dryland husky racing and much more.

Divided into seasonal sections and featuring more than forty-five chapters, many of the articles have appeared in The Field magazine. Here are all aspects of country life described in vivid detail, from the flora and fauna to the folklore. Descriptions of ancient customs feature alongside accounts of pigeon racing and hound trailing; and stories of exotic plant hunters from past centuries. Readers will encounter mad March hares, owls, ravens, bats, pike, eels, and the rare capercaillie. Other subjects include coppicing, ancient trees, hanging game, stoats, terriers and, that perennial British favourite, the weather. The author also takes us back to his childhood with memories of charcoal burners and of harvesting wild food.

Combining his engaging writing, expert insight and immense knowledge, Johnny Scott is a master at celebrating and chronicling the countryside. In this book he continues to convey his wisdom and affection for the magic of nature and rural life.

The thinking leader is not merely a holder of authority or a decision-maker, but an alert mind that sees beyond the moment and reads reality through analysis rather than emotion. He is a leader who understands that leadership begins with an idea before an order, and with vision before action. He does not follow events; he anticipates them. He does not wait for crises; he foresees them and reshapes the surrounding environment before it imposes its conditions.
The thinking leader combines intellectual depth with practical wisdom, balancing decisiveness with reflection, and speed with precision. He possesses the ability to break down complex problems, understand the behavior of individuals and groups, and transform knowledge into impactful decisions. He believes that building people is no less important than achieving results, and that strategic thinking is the true weapon in a rapidly changing world.
At his core, the thinking leader is a maker of meaning before being a manager of tasks. He builds trust through understanding, leads others with insight, and leaves his mark not only on what has been accomplished, but on the minds that were shaped by his leadership.

The New Kingdom of Egypt -...

The rise of the New Kingdom marks one of the most pivotal periods in Egyptian history, signaling the transformation of Egypt from a regional power to an expansive empire. This era began with the fall of the Middle Kingdom, a time of political instability and foreign invasions. As Egypt struggled with weak leadership and incursions from Asiatic and Nubian forces, the foundations were laid for the emergence of a new, more robust regime.
The decisive moment came with the reign of Ahmose I, who is credited with founding the 18th Dynasty and expelling the Hyksos invaders from the Delta region. Ahmose's victory over these foreign rulers was symbolic not only of military prowess but also of a reassertion of Egyptian identity and unity. This victory allowed the pharaohs of the New Kingdom to solidify their power and embark on territorial expansion that would characterize much of their rule.
Ahmose's successors built upon his military success. They began to push Egypt's borders further into Nubia to the south and the Levant to the north, extending Egypt’s reach and influence. The New Kingdom was thus defined by an ambitious policy of imperial expansion, which required a well-organized military and a stable central government. The initial successes of the 18th Dynasty laid the groundwork for the period's most famous rulers, such as Thutmose III, whose campaigns in Syria and Palestine created an empire that stretched far beyond Egypt’s traditional borders.

    Maya Civilization - Pyramids...

The Maya civilization emerged from the fertile lands of Mesoamerica, where early agricultural societies gradually developed into one of the most advanced cultures of the ancient world. Long before the rise of monumental cities and towering pyramids, the ancestors of the Maya lived in small villages, relying on farming, hunting, and fishing for sustenance. Corn, or maize, became the cornerstone of their diet and played a central role in their mythology, economy, and daily life. Over time, these early settlements expanded, evolving into complex societies with trade networks, religious practices, and political hierarchies.
The roots of Maya civilization can be traced back to the Preclassic period, around 2000 BCE. During this time, small communities scattered across present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador began cultivating staple crops such as maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers. As agricultural techniques improved, populations grew, leading to the formation of larger settlements. Villages transitioned into regional centers, where early forms of leadership and governance emerged. These developments set the stage for the sophisticated city-states that would later define the Maya world.
The Maya were not isolated in their cultural development. They shared Mesoamerica with other influential civilizations, most notably the Olmecs, who thrived along the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The Olmecs, often considered the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, left a lasting impact on the Maya through their artistic styles, religious beliefs, and ceremonial architecture. The colossal stone heads of the Olmecs, their early writing systems, and their concept of a sacred ballgame were all absorbed and adapted by the Maya. This exchange of ideas helped shape the foundations of Maya civilization, leading to the rise of the first great Maya cities.

A Pagan Polemic curates the evolving perspective of Jack Loeffler—itinerant wanderer, environmental warrior, storyteller, and story collector—whose true education began when he was marched into the Nevada desert one day at dawn to play "The Stars and Stripes Forever" during an atomic bomb test a scant few miles away. Since that day in 1957, Jack's mission in life has been to record peoples of the borderlands and to bring "indigenous mindedness" to the forefront of the conversation about our precarious environments and our decaying planet. A Pagan Polemic is a sweeping manifesto of Jack's core beliefs and long experience as a fierce (and funny) advocate for Nature and Nature-mindedness and against poisonous politics and policies.
