Sinopse

In "Nooks and Corners of English Life, Past and Present," John Timbs artfully explores the intricate tapestry of English society, deftly weaving historical anecdotes with keen observations of contemporary customs. The book's literary style merges engaging narrative with a rich assortment of local lore, offering readers an enlightening glimpse into the cultural variations across England. Timbs incorporates a diverse range of sources, including folklore, regional traditions, and biographical sketches, providing a textured understanding of the nation's collective consciousness through both past and present lenses. John Timbs, a Victorian journalist and social historian, drew upon his extensive background in writing about English culture and history to craft this compelling work. His enthusiasm for documenting the unusual and the overlooked reflects his own upbringing in a rapidly changing England, as the Industrial Revolution transformed societies and traditions. Timbs's previous works on urban life and the curiosities of England's local histories further enrich the insights presented in this book, bridging the gap between common experience and scholarly reflection. Readers interested in the fabric of English life will find "Nooks and Corners of English Life" an invaluable addition to their libraries. Timbs's accessible prose invites a broad audience to appreciate not only the nuances of English heritage but also the evolving narratives that shape modern identity, making it essential for anyone seeking to understand the cultural depth of England.

Someday, your life story is likely to be boiled down to a few lines. If you leave things to chance, your obituary is almost sure to be solemn, formulaic, and full of errors—an obligatory final chapter written in haste by others. James R. Hagerty, longtime obit writer for The Wall Street Journal, knows how to get the job done right: Do it yourself, starting now, while you still can.

In this heartfelt and reassuring guide, Hagerty explains how to preserve your personal history—from crafting a brief obituary for newspapers and websites, to a more thoughtful and detailed mini-memoir for those close to you. The show, now known as "Panic in the Streets," went on to become a cult favorite of fans and a decisive moment in Athens music history. This event holds the record for the world's largest record release party, but the story of how the it came to be has not been told until now.

Widespread Panic in the Streets of Athens, Georgia places listeners at the historic event, using in-depth investigation and interviews with the band, city officials, and "Spread Heads" who were there. This deeply researched and richly sourced book follows every stage of the concert's development from the spark of an idea to approximately one hundred thousand people packing the streets of a legendary music town. This is volume 3 of Major John Richardson, 1832 novel Wacousta. It is set at Fort Detroit and the surrounding country during Pontiac's rebellion of 1763. The mysterious warrior Wacousta has aligned himself with the First Nations forces who are besieging Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac on the extreme western edge of the British North American frontier. Pontiac is determined to stop expansion into the region, by any means. Wacousta, is a great friend of Pontiac but has his own agenda. - revenge against the British Commander at Detroit, Colonel De Haldimar. The story begins with Wacousta stealing in to the secure fort and whispering something in to De Haldimar's ear. Only later to we discover the nature of his message. Meanwhile, Pontiac designs a clever scheme to break the siege at the well defended fort - a scheme so cunningly designed as to have every chance of success. Volume 3 is the conclusion of this engaging work. This book was written in 1832 and incorporates all the attitudes and perspectives of class, race and culture prevalent at the time. Some of the terminology is now considered offensive but was common in the nineteenth century. It is a powerful and engaging story, although the style of writing is extremely convoluted and complex, and can be difficult to read. I hope hearing it helps you enjoy it.
