Summary

On Liberty is a philosophical work by English philosopher John Stuart Mill, originally intended as a short essay. The work applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and the state. Mill attempts to establish standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality which he conceived as a prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of Utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill criticised the errors of past attempts to defend individuality where, for example, democratic ideals resulted in the "tyranny of the majority". Among the standards established in this work are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society "which together form the entire doctrine of [Mill's] Essay."

On Liberty was a greatly influential and well received work though it did not go without criticism. Some attacked it for its apparent discontinuity with Utilitarianism, while others criticised its vagueness. The ideas presented in On Liberty have remained the basis of much liberal political thought. It has remained in print continuously since its initial publication. To this day, a copy of On Liberty is passed to the president of the British Liberal Democrats as a symbol of office. A copy of the same book is also presented to and then held by the resident of the Liberal Party as a symbol of office.

""The Romance of Modern Chemistry" is a fascinating glimpse into the state of chemistry a century ago. Written by James C. Philip, PhD, an assistant professor of chemistry at The Imperial College of Science and Technology, Kensington, this book provides a non-technical description of the diverse and wonderful ways in which chemical forces were at work and their manifold applications in modern life back in 191012. Imagine the scientific discoveries, the alchemical transformations, and the intricate dance of atoms and molecules as they shaped the world around us. Philip's prose invites readers to explore the hidden magic within everyday substances—their reactions, properties, and practical uses. From the bubbling test tubes in laboratories to the industrial processes that fueled progress, The Romance of Modern Chemistry captures the essence of an era when science was both mysterious and awe-inspiring. It's a journey through the alchemy of knowledge, where elements danced, compounds whispered secrets, and the periodic table unfolded its enigmatic patterns. So let us step into the past, don our metaphorical lab coats, and embark on a literary experiment—an adventure where curiosity meets discovery, and the molecules of imagination collide with the atoms of wonder. The theory of the fundamental features of the universe is referred to as physics. Around 30,000 years when these features had appeared, energy along with matter had started the coalescing into various complex structures referred to as the atoms. These then combined themselves into bigger molecules. The theory of atoms along with molecules as well as its interaction is referred to as the chemistry.
