Summary

Building Information Modeling (BIM), or the process of generating and managing digital information about physical representations of constructions, has been effectively adopted and benefited numerous civil engineering projects across the globe, particularly in developed countries. BIM Development and Trends in Developing Countries addresses the philosophies and practices for improved application of BIM in developing countries. Two case studies are presented in this reference: one from Malaysia and another representing Sri Lanka. Readers are given an introduction and background of the Malaysian and Sri Lankan construction industry and a critical review of BIM’s philosophies, development and applications in different stages of a construction project. The authors present their recommendations on the way forward for BIM practices articulated from the two perspectives, namely, academia and industrial BIM practice. The case studies in this book highlight the role of adequate BIM software techniques and the importance of governmental support in facing building challenges at the moment. . BIM Development and Trends in Developing Countries provides readers useful insights on the evolution of BIM practice in emerging countries and is a unique report on two specific scenarios in BIM development. Engineers, architects, urban planners and policy makers around the globe seeking to understand practical BIM implementation and trends will find this reference invaluable.

The story of how Yellowstone, established in 1872 as the world’s first national park, has become synonymous with nature conservation—and an examination of today’s challenges to preserve the region’s wilderness heritage. For more than 150 years, the Yellowstone region—now widely known as the twenty-three million acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem—has played a prominent role in the United States’ nature conservation agenda. In this book, Robert B. Keiter, an award-winning public land law and policy expert, traces the evolution and application of fundamental ecological conservation concepts tied to Yellowstone.

Keiter’s book highlights both the conservation successes and controversies connected with this storied region, which has been enmeshed in change.
But in the face of explosive human population growth and related development pressures, new efforts must also account for the region’s privately owned lands along with accelerating recreational activities that present quite different problems.

Exploring both notable conservation accomplishments and the ongoing challenges confronting this special place, Keiter’s book explains the many forces—scientific, political, economic, legal, cultural, climatic, and more—at work driving controversy and change across the region. But more than this, Conserving Nature in Greater Yellowstone shows us that the lessons gleaned from Yellowstone’s expansive nature conservation efforts are profoundly important for both the country and the world.

A fascinating exploration of the natural history of scent and human perceptions of fragrance from the viewpoint of plant and pollinator

Plants have long harnessed the chemical characteristics of aromatic compounds to shape the world around them. Frankincense resin from the genus Boswellia seals injured tissues and protects trees from invading pathogens. Jasmine produces a molecule called linalool that attracts pollinating moths with its flowery scent. Tobacco uses a similarly sweet-smelling compound called benzyl acetone to attract pollinators. Only recently in the evolutionary history of plants, however, have humans learned to co-opt their fragrances to seduce, heal, protect, and alter moods themselves.

In this wide-ranging and accessible new book, biologist-turned-perfumer Elise Vernon Pearlstine turns our human-centered perception of fragrance on its head and investigates plants' evolutionary reasons for creating aromatic molecules. Delving into themes of spirituality, wealth, power, addiction, royalty, fantasy, and more, Pearlstine uncovers the natural history of aromatic substances and their intersection with human culture and civilization.
