A man lies dead, a knife in his heart, and no one saw the killer—at least no one admits to it.
In this classic mystery from Wilkie Collins, a young constable recounts a long-unsolved crime that haunts him still: a lodging house murder where the most obvious answers feel too neat, and justice remains out of reach. Between a silent staircase, a troubled cook, and a love that flickers beneath the surface, Who Killed Zebedee? draws us into a web of suspicion, memory, and moral reckoning.
First published in 1881 and also known as The Policeman and the Cook, this tale blends psychological nuance with sharp suspense—hallmarks of Collins at his most compelling.

Prison Life - A Short Story...

For almost all of us the idea of being locked away in prison is a dreadful thought to consider. To be in that position, to get put away, for whatever reasons, for whatever pain or injury that was caused, whatever law was broken, the probability of years in a small, cramped space holds no appeal to anyone of reason and is almost always an absolute deterrent.

Whilst some of the characters in these stories deserve prison, others are the victims of a mis-carriage. Our authors including Victor Hugo, Franz Kafka, William Mudford and Vincente Blasco Ibanez explore life inside, and how many of the flawed characters of their stories cope with the undoubted stresses and deprivations that their lives now cause them. It is a harsh world in microcosm.

A tension packed, chilling story of long-awaited revenge from Top 10 Bestselling author Keri Beevis
Passion. Obsession. Cruelty. Control... There is no limit to how far some people will go for love.
Duncan Stone is one of the country's most eligible bachelors, and he wants to take me, Callie Parker, on a date.
At first I am surprised and flattered, the envy of my friends. Then when our whirlwind romance escalates and he asks me to move in with him, it's like a dream come true.
But as I get to really know my new boyfriend, my fairytale turns into a nightmare. Duncan is no Prince Charming. He is the Devil.
Soon, isolated from my friends and family, watched day and night, a prisoner in my own life, I know if I am going to survive, I need to escape.
When a chance encounter with an old friend throws me a lifeline, I realise this is my live or die moment, and I find a hiding place deep in the Norfolk countryside.
I'm supposed to feel safe here, so why do I hear footsteps outside my hideaway late at night, and sense that someone is watching me?
