The Visitor by Ray Bradbury - Exiles on Mars face a barren future until Leonard Mark brings a glimpse of freedom.
Saul Williams awoke to the still morning. He looked wearily out of his tent and thought about how far away Earth was. Millions of miles, he thought. It was very bad. But then what could you do about it? Your lungs were full of the “blood-rust.” You coughed all the time.
Saul arose this particular morning at seven o’clock. He was a tall man, lean, thinned by his illness. It was a quiet morning on Mars, with the dead sea bottom flat and silent, no wind on it. The sun was clear and cool in the empty sky. He washed his face and ate breakfast.
After that, he wanted very much to be back on Earth. During the day he tried every way that it was possible to be in New York City. Sometimes, if he sat right and held his hands a certain way, he did it. He could almost smell New York. Most of the time, though, it was impossible.
Later in the morning, Saul tried to die.
He lay on the sand and told his heart to stop. It continued beating. He imagined himself leaping from a cliff or cutting his wrists, but laughed to himself—for he knew he lacked the nerve for either act.

The Idiot is one of Fyodor Dostoevsky's most profound and philosophical novels, exploring the nature of goodness in a world driven by selfishness and ambition. The story follows Prince Lev Myshkin, a man of extraordinary kindness and sincerity, who returns to Russia after years of medical treatment abroad. His innocence and honesty set him apart from the manipulative society he encounters, where people view his goodness as either weakness or foolishness. As Myshkin navigates the complexities of high society, he becomes entangled in a web of relationships, each testing his ideals and moral strength. Dostoevsky uses his protagonist to pose fundamental questions about human nature, love, and the struggle between purity and corruption. The Idiot is a moving and thought-provoking novel that challenges readers to consider whether true goodness can survive in a world filled with deception and cruelty.

When he's found dead at the bottom of the stairs during a celebratory reception at St Rumwold's College, many wonder if seething jealousy of his literary success has turned someone's mind to murder. Detective Chief Inspector Arthur St. Just becomes inescapably drawn into an investigation that takes him down the historic streets of Oxford and into the hallowed halls of its university. Alongside his fiancée, crime-fiction writer Portia De'Ath, he uncovers several motives for murdering the celebrated but insufferable Jason—whose next novel may be a threat to many in his orbit—and no shortage of suspects who are nursing a grudge from the first novel. The big, bad wolf is about to go down.

Through sheer determination—and a whole lot of stubbornness—I, Blanche Hood, managed to evade the Red-Cap curse. Unlike my mom, I didn't fall for the huntsman or get eaten by the wolf, but I did gain a purpose. I became an agent for the Fairytale Bureau. My job? Countering the ugly side of the Grimm Effect.

My latest case involves a string of murders by a wolf, but I keep getting distracted by my neighbor. I will resist his growly voice. I will not notice the way his muscles bulge. I don't have time for romance because I need to focus on my job, especially since the perpetrator is taunting me. The killer is asking for a showdown, and he's going to get it.

Things don't quite go as planned. Turns out the wolf was under my nose this entire time. By the time I discover the truth, it's too late. Too late to lament the fact I was played. Too late to regret what could have been, and when I foolishly walk into a trap, it will take a miracle to save me. But everyone knows the Brothers Grimm stories don't always have happily-ever-afters.

If only love truly could break the curse.

    Contains mature themes.
