Written with a poignant blend of personal reflection and theological inquiry, the book provides a compelling critique of the inhumanity and ethical dilemmas surrounding slavery. Newton's narrative, steeped in the context of 18th-century Britain, synthesizes vivid personal experiences and biblical admonitions, forging a powerful appeal for abolition rooted in Christian ethics. "Future of an Illusion," authored by Sigmund Freud in 1927, embarks on a critical examination of religion, articulating it as a psychological construct born from humanity's deep-seated needs for protection, moral guidance, and understanding of the universe. Freud posits that religion, while serving as a comforting illusion to shield individuals from the stark realities of life and the inevitability of death, is ultimately a hindrance to intellectual and emotional maturity. He argues that the progress of civilization hinges on the ability of individuals to eschew religious belief in favor of rational thought and scientific inquiry. This work not only showcases Freud's psychoanalytic acumen but also engages deeply with the sociocultural role of religion, proposing a future where enlightened reason supplants faith. Despite the controversy it stirred, particularly among the devout, Freud's critique remains a pivotal contribution to the discourse on the psychology of religion and the development of secular thought.

For years, there has been no doubt that widespread consumption of meat is both environmentally destructive and morally dubious. A growing chorus of scientists, health experts, and activists champion the benefits of a plant-based diet. Nevertheless, change has been slow to arrive, and the chasm between our appetites and our collective well-being seems impossibly vast. We know we must transition to a more plant-based world. But what would such a world look like, and how do we realistically get there?

One group of people has been grappling with this question for decades: vegans. Once mocked for its hempy puritanism, the vegan movement has grown into a veritable cultural juggernaut. Yet visions of what our food system should look like continue to conflict. Is the healthful vegan lifestyle appealing—or alienating? Are high-tech meat alternatives merely a repeat performance of harmful fast-food values? Is modern veganism itself misguided—a wrong answer to the right questions?

In The Good Eater, Harvard-trained sociologist (and vegan) Nina Guilbeault, PhD, vividly explores the movement's history and its present-day tensions by grappling with the most fundamental question of all: Is there a truly ethical way to eat? What emerges is a fascinating portrait of how social change happens, with profound implications for our plates-and our planet.

The Thirty Years' War was one of the most horrific conflicts in history, and though it is widely viewed as a religious struggle, that was only part of the complicated war. Calvinists and Lutherans did not get along, and both persecuted some of the more radical Anabaptist sects. At the same time, one major motivation behind the war was Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II’s determination to rule all of the empire and not be just a figurehead. There were struggles between rulers and their estates over power, and Catholic France later entered the war on the side of the Protestants in order to counter the Habsburgs’ power.
The Battle of Breitenfeld, fought in September 1631, was one of the most decisive moments of the war. It was the first major Protestant victory and widely considered the crowning achievement of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus’ military career. Through his establishment of communication and supply lines at strategic points across the Baltic Sea, the securing of Protestant alliances, and his use of combined arms, amongst his other trademark techniques, the Swedish forces, against all odds, defeated their rivals. Such was the devastation inflicted upon their opponents that the Count of Tilly, the chief commander of the Catholic League's armies, had no other choice but to retreat. 6,000 or so Catholic soldiers were captured, many of them later incorporated into the Protestant forces. Whatever remained of the survivors vanished into the dark of the night.

The Cathars were different from the mainstream Catholic church in the 13th century. They openly rebelled against some of the hypocritical behavior by priests and leaders, and they established their own deviant beliefs according to the best ability of their conscience.
But when it all came down to it, what did this mean? What were those belief systems? How did they look at God, Satan, the purpose of life, or equality between the sexes, sexuality itself, or any other principle they embraced? What did they think of the crusades in the Middle East? And how did it all end for them?
Learn more about the Cathars, a community that made a significant impact during a time of dictatorships, massacres, and persecution of supposed heretics.
