Summary

In "Diderot and the Encyclopaedists," John Morley provides a meticulous exploration of the philosophical and cultural landscape of the Enlightenment, focusing specifically on Denis Diderot and his collaborative effort in the creation of the Encyclop√©die. Morley employs a narrative style that marries historical rigor with an engaging prose, illuminating the social and intellectual currents that influenced Diderot's thought. The book situates Diderot not only as a pivotal figure in the Enlightenment but also as a precursor to modern ideologies, showcasing his complex relationship with authority and reason amidst rising secularism. John Morley, a prominent British statesman and intellectual, is deeply acquainted with the intricacies of 18th-century thought, having gained a nuanced understanding of liberalism, liberty, and the role of reason in human affairs. His own experiences in public life and commitment to social justice and reform undoubtedly inform his examination of Diderot, as both men grapple with themes of freedom, education, and the pursuit of truth within a constraining society. This book is indispensable for anyone looking to grasp the fundamental shifts in Western thought that Diderot and his contemporaries catalyzed. Morley'Äôs insightful analysis not only enriches our understanding of Enlightenment ideals but also invites readers to reflect on the enduring implications of Diderot's vision, making it a compelling read for scholars and enthusiasts alike.

The author of the Washington Post’s hugely influential ""Plum Line"" sounds the alarm on the subversion of our democracy by self-interested politicians, greedy plutocrats, foreign government hacking, racial prejudice, media propaganda and our own lack of vigilance, and what must be done to save it before it’s too late.
The sophistication and ambition of those now eroding American democracy by gaming the rules in their favor is unprecedented, including computer-generated gerrymandering, unreasonable voter ID laws, limitations on voting hours, a lack of convenient polling places, and efforts to disenfranchise likely Democratic voters. This has been accompanied by foreign government intervention and an unprecedented level of political disinformation that threatens to undermine the very possibility of shared agreement on facts and poses profound new challenges to the media’s ability to inform the citizenry.
Yet it would be wrong to think that the problem is that Republicans alone have learned how to work the system—our electoral process is undermining itself from within: its dysfunctional rules incentivize vicious partisan efforts to tilt the playing field, combining in a toxic escalation of polarization and a frightening corrosion of basic norms that threaten to totally eradicate fair play in politics.
In An Uncivil War, Washington Post journalist Greg Sargent vividly lifts the curtain on the nightmare dynamic that is transforming American politics into little more than a naked power struggle. Yet An Uncivil War is not only a thorough dissection of an ultimately immoral system, but a handbook for turning that around by restoring authentic democracy. Given the incredibly high stakes in 2018 and 2020, Sargent’s book could not be more essential.

THE NEW KALISHNIKOVS :: AK-47 - aka Drones
This poem is about the new invention in war, of small arms arsenals - The Drone. Coming on the heels of the
former mass produced and used small arm the - Kalashnikov rifle.
The similarities of the AK and Drones, for widespread use are their cheapness to build relative to their
use - cost benefit. Their individual strike and their reliability, and their
    effectiveness.
In all its guises, it represents a new era in remote 'close contact'.
The Drone itself being sent from a remote location and controlled at a remote location,
but the target being an individual, small group or military vehicle like the Tank.
Drones are fast becoming the choice of weapon in the modern age for battlefield contact.

A heartwarming philosophical meditation on how to live a fulfilling life—inspired by the inherent happiness of dogs.

If you have spent any part of your life with a dog, you may have found certain questions popping, unbidden, into your mind: Is my dog living a fulfilled life? Is my dog a good dog? Does my dog love me? Addressing these questions compels you to confront not just your dog's life but yours as well—to think about what fulfillment, and meaning, in life really is.

In The Word of Dog, philosopher Mark Rowlands explores these questions and suggests that in dogs we can see hints—faint, shrouded, but discernible—of what a better way of living might look like. Perhaps none of us can be happy in the way a dog can, but The Word of Dog shows us we could do a lot better than we're doing simply by listening to the unspoken wisdom our dogs reveal to us every day of their happy, uncomplicated lives.
