One soldier’s fight didn’t end on the battlefield — it began there.

This is the raw, haunting memoir of war, shame, survival, and the search for redemption.

At just seventeen, Jason Gibney enlisted in the Australian Defence Force, full of vigour and a thirst for adventure. Over the next decade, he served in Iraq, Afghanistan’s deadly Chora Valley, and during the heartbreaking fall of Kabul in 2021. His missions included fierce firefights with the Taliban and a devastating role as an interpreter during the chaotic civilian evacuations. His final role in the evacuation of Kabul was to drag screaming, visa-denied Afghans to their fate, men he could understand, whose death sentences he could hear in their own words.

In this searing memoir, he relives the brutalities of combat and the invisible wounds that followed — panic attacks, flashbacks, and a crushing sense of guilt. Diagnosed with PTSD and discharged, his war didn’t end — it simply changed form. Scars of War charts his long, painful journey through trauma, shame, rage, and finally, the beginning of healing.

This isn’t a tale of heroism or closure. It’s about what happens when the medals don’t match the memories. When the politicians walk away, but you can’t. And when the only way out is through.

Brave, blisteringly honest, and heartbreakingly human, Scars of War is a call to understand what we ask of our soldiers — and what they carry home.

‘In that moment, I wasn’t a soldier — I was a monster dragging a man to his death.’

‘A true story of modern war like no other — honest, enraging, and unforgettable.’

Levi Lerman was a cheerful and lively boy from the town of Ostrowiec. He was only fourteen years old when his life took an unimaginable turn with the outbreak of World War II in 1939, when the Nazi forces invaded Poland and occupied his hometown.
Over a painful six-year period, Levi endured a harsh life in the Ostrowiec ghetto, suffered devastating losses, performed exhausting forced labor, and survived countless transfers to concentration camps, including the extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
In the middle of this torment, a single light guided him through the darkness: his unbreakable determination to live and to protect his father—a strength that helped him survive against all odds.

“I never wanted to be hearing. I said this out loud in my TED talk, and the audience went bug-eyed, struggling to process this heresy. How could anyone not want to be hearing? I wasn’t anti-hearing. I just felt my life would be simpler if everyone else were deaf.” So begins the compelling story of acclaimed TED speaker Rebecca Knill as she guides us through a life shaped by hearing loss. Throughout, Knill offers eye-opening insights into disability and celebrates the power of technology to level the playing field.A provocative memoir, Radio Head Gal challenges the notion that a deaf existence is inferior, advocating instead for hearing loss to be recognized as an aspect of physical diversity similar to race or gender identity. The memoir delves into themes of adaptation, discrimination, faith, mother/daughter dysfunction, and the quest for belonging in a world that remains largely inaccessible to the d/Deaf.Growing up before accommodation laws or smart technology, Knill reflects on her life pre- and post-cochlear implant ― a surgical procedure in which computer chips replaced her sense of hearing, cyborg-style ― and the birth of her alter ego, Radio Head Gal. The book's subject is timely: hearing loss now affects 1 in 5 young people, a 30% increase since the 1990s. By 2050, hearing loss is expected to swell to 1 in 4 across all age groups worldwide. As younger generations face this reality, technological innovation must follow. With humor and insight, Knill explores themes of self-worth, communication, and the pivotal role technology plays in promoting inclusion. Recognized as a Top 25 Talk of 2020 by the TED Editors, Radio Head Gal is a vital resource to support those with hearing loss, providing intimate revelations and enlightening perspectives that cut through emotional barriers. Dive into this empowering narrative that challenges perceptions and advocates for an inclusive, technology-driven future, regardless of ability differences.
