Sinopse

In "The Young Gentleman and Lady's Monitor, and English Teacher's Assistant," John Hamilton Moore presents a comprehensive guide aimed at cultivating not just the intellect but also the manners and behaviors of young men and women in the 18th century. This instructive manual is characterized by its didactic style, featuring an array of moral and practical lessons intertwined with a rich vocabulary intended to enhance language skills. Moore meticulously addresses the social and educational needs of young people, reflecting a cultural context where formal education and genteel behavior were paramount for social mobility and respect in an increasingly stratified society. John Hamilton Moore was a prominent educational reformer and author of the late 18th century, driven by a profound belief in the importance of moral and intellectual development in youth. His background in teaching and his own experiences in navigating social norms likely informed the multifaceted approach of his writing. Moore'Äôs commitment to rectifying the educational inadequacies of his time underscores the significance of this work as both a practical manual and a moral compass for young individuals. I wholeheartedly recommend "The Young Gentleman and Lady's Monitor, and English Teacher's Assistant" to anyone engaged with historical pedagogy, literature from the Enlightenment era, or the evolution of moral education. This invaluable text not only reflects the period's educational ideals but also offers timeless wisdom that remains relevant in contemporary discussions surrounding youth development.

A new account of how Portugal fought a bush war in Mozambique for over a decade.Portugal fought a bush war in Mozambique — one of the most beautiful countries in the world — for over a decade. The small European nation was ranged against formidable odds and in the end was unable to muster the resources required to effectively take on the might of the Soviet Union and its collaborators—every single communist country on the planet and almost all of Black Africa. Yet, Al Venter argues, Portugal did not actually lose the war, and indeed fought in difficult terrain with a good degree of success over an extended period. It was radical domestic politics that heralded the end. Mozambique is once again embroiled in a guerrilla war, this time against a large force of Islamic militants, many from Somalia and some Arab countries, and unequivocally backed by Islamic State and the lessons of Mozambique’s bush war are still relevant today.

Transformative Experience by L.A. Paul challenges the foundations of how we make life's biggest decisions. From becoming a parent to changing careers—or even becoming a vampire in a thought experiment—some choices don’t just alter your circumstances; they change you. Paul introduces the concept of transformative experiences—decisions that are both epistemically transformative (you can’t know what they’re like until you live them) and personally transformative (they change your core values, preferences, or identity).

Traditional models of rational decision-making assume we can evaluate outcomes based on what we currently value. But what happens when the experience itself reshapes those values? If you can't imagine what the future will feel like, or if your future self values different things, how can you make a rational choice now?

Blending vivid examples, from parenthood to philosophical thought experiments, Paul explores the limits of foresight, the nature of self, and how we might embrace decision-making not as prediction—but as discovery. Transformative Experience is a groundbreaking work that forces us to rethink autonomy, authenticity, and the very meaning of rational choice.

    The Anchoring Effect - How...

The anchoring effect is a cognitive bias that has significant implications for how people make decisions. It refers to the phenomenon where individuals rely heavily on the first piece of information they receive when making subsequent judgments. This initial information, known as the "anchor," serves as a reference point, influencing how individuals perceive and evaluate all related information. The anchoring effect has been studied extensively in the fields of psychology, economics, and decision science, revealing how it subtly but powerfully shapes human judgment, often without people being aware of its influence.
At its core, the anchoring effect occurs because humans have a natural tendency to rely on available information when making decisions, even if that information is arbitrary or irrelevant. Once an anchor is introduced, people tend to adjust their judgments or estimates based on that anchor, but they often do so insufficiently. This means that their final decision or judgment is still heavily influenced by the anchor, regardless of whether it is logically or contextually appropriate.
Research on the anchoring effect began in the early 1970s with the groundbreaking work of psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. In one of their most famous experiments, participants were asked to estimate the number of countries in Africa. Before giving their estimates, they were shown a random number (the anchor), such as 10 or 100, and were then asked if the number of African countries was higher or lower than the anchor. The results revealed that participants’ estimates were skewed toward the anchor, even though the number was entirely unrelated to the actual question. This experiment demonstrated the power of anchors in influencing judgments, even when they have no logical relevance to the decision at hand.

Describes what being a foster mom is really like, the effects of foster care on the whole family, and how the foster care system fails severely abused children.

Foster children are society's throwaway kids, the children no one wants—until someone finally does. Saving Michael provides an inside look at Keri Vellis's struggle to secure the best possible services for two severely abused and traumatized siblings. Listeners get a glimpse of Keri and her family's day-to-day life as she went from mother of three to adoptive mother of three more children and then the temporary caregiver of another seventeen.

Saving Michael delves into issues bigger than one family's experiences and determination. Now an author and child advocate, Vellis provides a profoundly personal look into what it takes to get the best for each of the children she's had in her care. Her journey started from the first day of her first foster care situation and the urgent need for diagnoses and treatment. Along the way, she details the many ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, her whole family experienced as part of the foster care system. All children deserve permanent, safe homes. The effort to obtain those for every child is a tremendous one not for the faint-hearted. But the rewards reverberate for everyone when it works.
