Sinopse

"What are you, where did you come from, and whither are you bound?"—the question which from Homer's days has been put to the wayfarer in strange lands—is likewise the all-absorbing question which man is ever asking of the universe of which he is himself so tiny yet so wondrous a part. From the earliest times the ultimate purpose of all scientific research has been to elicit fragmentary or partial responses to this question, and philosophy has ever busied itself in piecing together these several bits of information according to the best methods at its disposal, in order to make up something like a satisfactory answer. In old times the best methods which philosophy had at its disposal for this purpose were such as now seem very crude, and accordingly ancient philosophers bungled considerably in their task, though now and then they came surprisingly near what would to-day be called the truth.

A memoir about zookeeping, and what animals taught me about feminism.

In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong.

Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna?

In this insightful and delightful book, Erna blends memoir and pop science to tell a fiercely female story. She recounts a life spent caring for animals in a fast transforming industry, and dives into scientific evidence and evolutionary history to debunk the myths that once held her back.

With almost 4 billion men in the world, who said there could only be 1 prince charming your whole life? There are many religious, cultural, and family belief systems about the way that we, as women, should or should not be, in our relationships with men. Like other women, I was influenced by various family members and outdated religious beliefs. I did not grow up in a fairytale family with a mom and dad that knew exactly how to co-create a strong collaborative mutually supportive partnership. With no real examples to learn from or any idea how to go about creating what I was looking for, I set out on my own journey.
Whether you are single and searching, Un-merrily married, or divorced and doubtful about getting back into the game of love, this book has real life stories that will assist you in:Identifying key family dynamics and religious beliefs that have influenced your choices.Recognizing when you are repeating the same relationship, but with a different man.Distinguishing between a real or fantasy relationshipExploring your preferences by appreciating Mr. Right NowClarifying what you want so that you can consciously create your Mr. Right
My book is about going for the Olympic Gold Medal in Love. It is about never giving up on having what you believe is right for you and your love relationships, regardless of what any external influence believes you should think, say, or do. In my book you will gain insight into where you may have created your love relationships unconsciously, obtain greater clarity surrounding your preferences in men, and learn how to consciously create the love partnership that is right for you.

This book offers the listener thrilling, action-packed snapshots of life as a Luftwaffe nightfighter. On 21 June 1941, assigned to Luftwaffe bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 53, the twenty-three-year-old Arnold Döring took off to fly his first mission against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. From that day, he kept a diary describing his operations in vivid detail. These diaries, here translated into English for the first time, give a unique perspective on the action on the Eastern Front, from the point of view of a bomber pilot. Döring's accounts not only give technical aspects but are also filled with suspense and excitement with their close descriptions of bombing raids and narrow escapes from enemy fighter planes. This unembellished account gives an honest and meticulous record that moves rapidly from one area to another, from one operation to the next. With a detached professionalism, Döring offers us thrilling, action-packed snapshots of life as a Luftwaffe nightfighter.Döring flew a total of 392 aerial attacks and was awarded the Knight's Cross in April 1945.
