Summary

In "Studies in Logical Theory," John Dewey presents a comprehensive exploration of logic, emphasizing its practical implications in human experience and inquiry. This work is characterized by a blend of analytic rigor and philosophical reflection, challenging traditional notions of static truth and advocating for a more dynamic understanding of logic intertwined with experience. Dewey asserts that logical reasoning is not merely an abstract discipline but is fundamentally rooted in human activity, emphasizing the importance of context and adaptability in thought processes—an argument that situates his work within the pragmatist tradition emerging at the turn of the 20th century. John Dewey, a prominent figure in American philosophy and education, was instrumental in shaping the pragmatist school of thought. His experiences as an educator and philosopher led him to prioritize practical consequences in logical analysis, reflecting his belief that knowledge should be actionable and responsive to real-world situations. Dewey's educational background in psychology and his commitment to democratic ideals profoundly influenced his philosophical inquiries, ultimately culminating in this seminal work that bridges the divide between logic and experiential learning. "Studies in Logical Theory" is an essential read for those interested in the intersections of logic, psychology, and education. Dewey's insights encourage readers to reconsider the purpose of reasoning in a rapidly changing world, making this book not just a theoretical treatise but also a guide for practical decision-making. For educators, philosophers, and students alike, Dewey's work remains a crucial text that challenges us to think critically and apply logic thoughtfully within our lived experiences.

What World Is This? - A Pandemic...

The pandemic compels us to ask fundamental questions about our place in the world: the many ways humans rely on one another, how we vitally and sometimes fatally breathe the same air, share the surfaces of the earth, and exist in proximity to other porous creatures in order to live in a social world. What we require to live can also imperil our lives. How do we think from, and about, this common bind?

Judith Butler shows how COVID-19 and all its consequences—political, social, ecological, economic—have challenged us to reconsider the sense of the world that such disasters bring about. Drawing on the work of Max Scheler, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and critical feminist phenomenology, Butler illuminates the conditions in which we seek to make sense of our disorientation, precarity, and social bonds. What World Is This? offers a new account of interdependency in which touching and breathing, capacities that amid a viral outbreak can threaten life itself, challenge the boundaries of the body and selfhood. Criticizing notions of unlimited personal liberty and the killing forces of racism, sexism, and classism, this book suggests that the pandemic illuminates the potential of shared vulnerabilities as well as the injustice of pervasive inequalities.

Asa Mulvaney is half of a psychopathic whole. He and his twin brother live together, party together…kill together. In the Mulvaney family, murder is the family business and business is good. So, when an experiment separates Asa and his brother, Asa is forced to navigate the world on his own for the first time in his life.
Zane Scott is a small-time crime blogger, but he dreams of a byline in a major paper and his suspicions surrounding Thomas Mulvaney are about to make that dream a reality. When an invitation to a boring fundraiser lands him not beside Thomas, as he had hoped, but Asa Mulvaney, they share an intensely passionate encounter that leaves Zane trapped in a cage of his own making.
At a nearby college, a cluster of suicides isn’t what it seems. When Asa’s father asks him to look into it, he sees the perfect opportunity to exploit his little crime reporter and make him fall in line. And Asa needs him to fall in line. Zane is suspicious of Asa’s motives and half-convinced he’s dead either way, but he won’t say no to a chance to peek behind the Mulvaney family curtains.
As the two unravel a sinister plot, Asa’s obsession with Zane grows and Zane finds being Asa’s sole focus outweighs almost anything, maybe even his career—which is good for Asa because loving a Mulvaney is a full-time job. Can he convince Zane that he’s worth navigating a family of psychopaths and tolerating an almost too close for comfort twin? Or will Zane learn the hard way that the Mulvaney boys always get what they want? Always.

This book is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals in various fields. They have all been asked the same set of questions, and have answered, to the best of their ability and knowledge. What you’re about to read is the answers to these questions, not from all the individuals, but from the most interesting 4 or 5 who answered each question. These interviews are for two kinds of audiences: 1) curious amateurs, and 2) science, engineering, or other professionals who have a general knowledge of and curiosity about science, but who are not experts in the field being covered.
At the start of my journey in science, I already had a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, but that was from 1998, certainly not 2016 when I started. Reading scientific papers was difficult at first – I understood about 10% of what I was reading. As I interviewed more scientists, researchers, clinicians and others, I started to pick up the vocabulary and thinking process needed to read scientific papers. After a year of reading, my comprehension increased, and now stands at around 70%, typically. In the areas of Physics or other sciences in which I’m not conversant, I understand about 30%. In advanced math, since it’s a language unto itself, especially at high levels, I am back to the 10% level.
Apply yourself, and you’ll be surprised at what you can learn in a year’s time.
