Sinopse

In "Essays in Experimental Logic," John Dewey delves into the intricate relationship between logic and experience, presenting a compelling argument for an approach to logic grounded in real-world situations. Dewey's writing is characterized by clarity and precision, seamlessly blending philosophical inquiry with practical implications. He critiques traditional logical frameworks, emphasizing the dynamic and contingent nature of thought processes, which, he posits, must evolve in response to the complexities of lived experience. The essays in this collection challenge readers to reevaluate the purpose of logic and its application in experimental contexts, bridging the gap between philosophy and the sciences. John Dewey, a prominent American philosopher and educator, was a leading figure in pragmatism and instrumentalism, deeply influenced by his experiences in progressive education and social reform. His commitment to democracy and inquiry is mirrored in this work, as he advocates for a logic that is adaptable and responsive to the changing needs of society. Given his extensive background in both philosophy and educational practice, Dewey offers a unique perspective that highlights the importance of experiential learning in the development of logical reasoning. "Essays in Experimental Logic" is essential reading for anyone interested in philosophy, education, or the evolution of modern thought. Dewey's insights invite readers to consider how logic operates within the framework of human experience, making it a vital resource for scholars and students alike. This work not only enriches our understanding of logic but also challenges us to embrace a more dynamic and engaged approach to thinking.

Enough Is Enuf - Our Failed...

A brief and humorous 500-year history of the Simplified Spelling Movement from advocates like Ben Franklin, C. S. Lewis, and Mark Twain to texts and Twitter.
Why does the G in George sound different from the G in gorge? Why does C begin both case and cease? And why is it funny when a philologist faints, but not polight to laf about it? Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to write in English has, at one time or another, struggled with its spelling.
So why do we continue to use it? If our system of writing words is so tragically inconsistent, why haven’t we standardized it, phoneticized it, brought it into line? How many brave linguists have ever had the courage to state, in a declaration of phonetic revolt: “Enough is enuf”?
The answer: many. In the comic annals of linguistic history, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to bring English into the realm of the rational. This book is about them: Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. S. Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and the innumerable others on both sides of the Atlantic who, for a time in their life, became fanatically occupied with writing thru instead of through, tho for though, laf for laugh, beleev for believe, and dawter for daughter (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too).
Henry takes his humorous and informative chronicle right up to today as the language seems to naturally be simplifying to fit the needs of our changing world thanks to technology—from texting to Twitter and emojis, the Simplified Spelling Movement may finally be having its day.

    Free Speech and Turbulent...

    Michael J. Glennon

A vast censorship regime has smothered America's digital marketplace of ideas, squelching free speech on vital policy issues. Its supporters regard its benefits as morally and politically beyond question. They contend it's carried out by private social media platforms, not governmental authorities.

In Free Speech and Turbulent Freedom, Michael J. Glennon offers a timely and incisive response. The censors are short-sighted, he argues. Quibbling over outdated distinctions misses the real threat—which is the fusion of public and private power into a modern-day cartel able to overleap longstanding constitutional safeguards. American democracy, he argues, rests on a decentralized marketplace of ideas independent of the government. In crisp, trenchant terms, Glennon shows how concrete practical concerns justify protecting admittedly harmful online speech—even speech that advocates violence or embraces hatred or apparent falsehood.

To safely self-correct, democracy requires open channels of political communication. Glennon calls on the courts to unblock those channels—to measure such speech against enduring First Amendment precepts rather than pliable international norms—and to protect the speech interests not merely of the government and Big Tech, but of all participants in the marketplace of ideas.

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counterexample to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave. It was in response to this disbelief that Douglass wrote his first autobiography.

Following the Civil War, Douglass was an active campaigner for the rights of freed slaves . Douglass also actively supported women's suffrage, and he held several public offices. Without his permission, Douglass became the first African American nominated for vice president of the United States, as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket.

Douglass believed in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, as well as in the liberal values of the U.S. Constitution. When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union with Slaveholders", criticized Douglass's willingness to engage in dialogue with slave owners, he replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.
