In this expertly crafted follow-up to his acclaimed novel The Inheritance, Simon Tolkien has once again written a gripping and nuanced thriller laced with historical detail, treachery, and his signature writing style—a uniquely suspenseful blend that the Los Angeles Times called "half Christie and half Grisham."It's 1960, and David Swain is two years into his life sentence for murdering the lover of his ex-girlfriend, Katya Osman. In the dead of night, David escapes from prison, and that same night Katya is found murdered in her uncle's home, Blackwater Hall.Inspector Trave of the Oxford Police, last seen in The Inheritance, heads the manhunt for David, whom he first brought to justice two years earlier. But Trave's suspicions lead him to Katya's uncle Titus Osman, a rich diamond dealer, and his sinister brother-in-law, Franz Claes, who has gone to great lengths to hide his former ties with the Nazis. However, Trave's motives are suspect - Osman is having an affair with Trave's estranged wife, Vanessa, and a newcomer to the Oxford Police, Inspector Macrae, is eager to exploit Trave's weaknesses to further his own ambition. Caught up in his superiors' rivalry, Trave's young assistant, Adam Clayton, finds himself uncertain who is right and which side to choose. Once David is captured and put on trial for his life, Trave is willing to risk everything that is dear to him—professionally and personally—to pursue his obsessive belief in Osman's guilt. The King of Diamonds is a Kirkus Reviews Best of 2011 Mysteries title.

The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, one of 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the 10th of the 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in Strand Magazine in April 1892.
Lord Robert St. Simon's new American bride, Hatty Doran, has disappeared almost immediately after the wedding. The servants had prevented an old love interest of his from forcing her way into the wedding breakfast, and Hatty had been seen in whispered conversation with her maid. Inspector Lestrade arrives with the news that Hatty's wedding dress and ring have been found floating in the Serpentine. Holmes quickly solves the mystery, locating Hatty at a hotel with a mysterious, "common looking" man who had picked up her dropped bouquet after the ceremony.
The man turns out to be Hatty's husband, Frank, whom she had thought dead in America and who managed to locate her only moments before she was to marry Lord St. Simon. Frank and Hatty had just decided to go to Lord St. Simon in order to explain the situation when Holmes found them.

A bundle of books #1 (ON THE ROCKS) and #2 (EXTRA DIRTY) in Mia Gold’s Ruby Steele cozy mystery series. This bundle offers books one and two in one convenient file.

In ON THE ROCKS (Book #1), Ruby Steele, 30, beautiful, fit, seems just like any other ex-pat hiding out in the Bahamas and playing local bartender. But unruly patrons find out the hard way: Ruby is a mixed-martial-arts pro, and not one you’d want to cross. In fact, Ruby would be a champion if she hadn’t been forced to walk away and hide out in the Bahamas. Because Ruby knows too much. She knows where the bodies are buried. And she knows when it’s time to get out of town. But what Ruby doesn’t know is why there is a dead tourist in the dumpster behind her seedy bar. Or why, she, of all people, had to find it. Or why this guy was out at 3am when he had a pretty fiancé waiting in a hotel room a mile away. Or why the local cops are pinning her. Or why she’s gonna be forced into a choice: find the killer, or do hard time herself. For Ruby, good choices have never been her strong point. And this one’s definitely not going to be good…

In EXTRA DIRTY (Book #2), a 40-something female tourist seeks out Ruby, desperate for her help. She was out partying all night with her friend, both of them drinking way too much and doing things they don’t want their husbands to know about. The problem is, as of 12 hours ago, her friend is missing. Their husbands can’t know. The cops can’t know. She needs Ruby’s help. And she’s running out of time. Ruby, though, has enough problems of her own. Shadowy figures from her old life are getting close. Way too close. Can Ruby really play detective and take on someone else’s problems? Who is this woman, anyway? And what isn’t she telling her? Ruby can’t keep away from a bad decision. And this time, it looks like, won’t be any exception….

Welcome to the Bahamian world of Ruby Steele, replete with her local dive bar, her wily pet monkey, her major drinking problem, her (way) too many fights, her inability to get herself out of trouble, and her fists made of stone. Ruby’s life is a complete wreck. But there’s one thing she’s good at: capturing your heart. THE RUBY STEELE MYSTERY SERIES is a page-turning mystery/thriller series, one that will linger with you long after the last page is read.

Book #3 in the series (FULL-BODIED) is now also available.

"The Adventure of the Three Students", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson find themselves in a university town when a tutor and lecturer of St Luke's College, Mr. Hilton Soames, brings him an interesting problem. Soames had been reviewing the galley proofs of an exam he was going to give when he left his office for an hour. When he returned, he found that his servant, Bannister, had entered the room but accidentally left his key in the lock when he left, and someone had disturbed the exam papers on his desk and left traces that show it had been partially copied. Bannister is devastated and collapses on a chair, but swears that he did not touch the papers. Soames found other clues in his office: pencil shavings, a broken pencil lead, a fresh cut in his desk surface, and a small blob of black clay speckled with sawdust.
