Beschreibung

The Essence of Wilderness: 9 Classic Wildlife Books offers a profound exploration into the myriad depictions of the natural world, celebrating the untamed spirit of the wilderness through a compilation of nine seminal works. This anthology traverses diverse literary styles ranging from evocative prose to detailed naturalist narratives, immersing readers in the raw beauty and mystique of the wild. Each piece within this collection captures the multifaceted relationship humanity shares with nature, unearthing our collective reverence, fear, and curiosity toward the wild landscapes that have inspired writers throughout history. Collectively, the authors in this anthology, including Alfred Wellesley Rees, John Burroughs, and Joaquin Miller, hail from varied backgrounds, yet share a common pursuit of capturing nature’s essence in their writing. Rooted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these works resonate with the ethos of the naturalist movement, bridging the gap between scientific observation and poetic narration. From the conservation-driven insights of William T. Hornaday to William J. Long’s immersive wilderness stories, this anthology weaves together voices from a pivotal era in ecological consciousness, offering readers a comprehensive journey into the literary tradition of nature writing. Readers are invited to embark on an intellectual adventure through the pages of this anthology, discovering a tapestry of perspectives that enrich their appreciation of the natural world. The Essence of Wilderness not only serves as an educational compendium of wildlife literature, but also offers a rare dialogue between the diverse minds of a bygone era, whose works continue to inspire and provoke thoughtful reflection on our place within the environment. A cornerstone for both scholars and nature enthusiasts alike, this volume beckons to those eager to explore the timeless allure and complexity of the wilderness through the eyes of its most eloquent storytellers.

'An immense feat of endurance, a remarkable achievement, and a truly inspirational adventure filled with courage and hope' – Sir Ranulph Fiennes
At the age of sixty, and having lived with Parkinson’s disease for over ten years, Guy Deacon CBE set out on one last adventure: to drive solo from his home in the UK 18,000 miles and through twenty-five countries to Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa. This incredible journey, across Europe and down the full length of Africa, took the former British Army officer over twelve months. Along the way, he broke down five times, underwent one emergency evacuation, and took 3,650 prescription pills.
There are only a handful of vehicles each year which attempt this difficult journey; many never complete it. Ongoing conflicts in Libya, South Sudan, Mozambique and many other countries make any journey exceptionally dangerous. In central Africa, road conditions, particularly in the rainy season, often make the going treacherous. Further hazards include illegal checkpoints, extortion, contaminated fuel and a lack of services.
Guy drove, lived and slept in his VW Transporter, often in remote spots, hundreds of miles from the nearest village or town. Reliant on patchy GPS, he often got lost. His journey was, quite simply, an incredible feat by a man travelling alone with Stage 3 Parkinson’s disease, when simply putting on a pair of shoes can take half an hour.
But not only did Guy’s journey fulfil a childhood dream to drive the length of Africa, his mission was also to raise global awareness of Parkinson’s disease, for which there is currently still no cure.

John Keats was an English poet of the second generation of Romantic poets, with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. His poems were indifferently received in his lifetime, but his fame grew rapidly after his death. By the end of the century he was placed in the canon of English literature, strongly influencing many writers of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Keats had a style "heavily loaded with sensualities", notably in the series of odes. Typically of the Romantics, he accentuated extreme emotion through natural imagery. Today his poems and letters remain among the most popular and analysed in English literature – in particular "Ode to a Nightingale", "Ode on a Grecian Urn", "Sleep and Poetry" and the sonnet "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer". This audiobook contains the following topics:
1: John Muir was a prominent Scottish-American biologist, author, ecological philosophy, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early supporter for the conservation of wilderness in the US of America. He was also called "John of the Mountains" and "Dad of the National Parks." Countless people have read his letters, essays, and books on his exploits in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada.
2: From 1955 till his assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist clergyman and activist who ended up being the most identifiable voice and leader in the American civil liberties movement. King used nonviolence and civil disobedience to advance civil liberties, inspired by his Christian convictions and Mahatma Gandhi's tranquil work.
3: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian attorney, anti-colonial patriot, and political ethicist who used nonviolent resistance to lead the triumphant struggle for India's independence from British rule, motivating civil liberties and liberty movements around the globe.
4: Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, typically referred to as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in the Catholic Church, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje (today the capital of North Macedonia), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire's Kosovo Vilayet.
5: The Industrial Revolution was a period of shift in Britain, continental Europe, and the USA from around 1760 till at some point between 1820 and 1840, when new production innovations were introduced.

    REBEL. PHILOSOPHER. BODYBUILDING ICON.

Mike Mentzer was a strikingly handsome man with a brilliant mind and a “perfect” physique — the first bodybuilder to receive a perfect score in both amateur and professional competitions. In the late ’70s, Mentzer rose to the very top of his sport (despite the efforts made by industry power brokers, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger), was featured in GQ magazine, and profiled on national television. But he was also a man who wrestled with mental illness his entire life and ended up living on the streets and being sent to prison. Just when it seemed his career was over, he found it within himself to reboot his intellect and revolutionize bodybuilding training, arguing bodybuilders should not forsake their mental development in favor of developing their bodies. He became a pariah in the fitness industry (which only cared about selling supplements and other products) but a hero to legions of fans who earnestly sought truth.

Mike Mentzer: American Odysseus is the first biography of Mike Mentzer to appear in North America written by his close friend of 21 years, John Little, “one of the leading fitness researchers in North America” (Iron Man magazine). Drawing upon audio recordings, letters, diary excerpts, as well as interviews with those closest to him, this is the true story of one man who stood up to an entire industry — and paid the ultimate price.

Part 2 picks up where Part 1 left off. Part 2 covers my last 24 years in Thailand where I battled drugs and alcohol and pretty much hit the skids until I started attending Alcoholics Annonymous and Narcotics Annonymous meetings here in Thailand. At this time I am one and a half years sober. I am 70 years old and I have a 5 year old son who lives with me in Thailand. This book is not for the faint of heart and in fact is pretty rough. Included in this book are over 200 full page color images which I took along the way. This book does contain erotic photos and erotic text because it is part of my story.
