Sinopse

It is AD 726 and King Ine of Wessex, tired of rebellion and internal strife, makes a pilgrimage to Rome. In an announcement, he decides to leave his kingdom to someone younger and thus, the door open to contending rival factions.

Among the young men with a strong claim to the throne is Aethelheard, Caedwalla's son: a brave warrior and brilliant strategist. To secure the throne he has to overcome other aethelings encouraged by the wayward nun, Wynflaed, engaged in a personal campaign of revenge with Aethelheard’s mother Cynethryth, Abbess of Wimborne.

The third novel in John Broughton's 'Wyrd Of The Wolf' series, The Wyvern's End is an epic tale of faith, ambition, and treachery, where the fates of kingdoms hinge not only on battles, but on the unseen maneuvers of those who walk the shadowy halls of power.

One of the iconic characters of all Russian literature, Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is the ultimate “superfluous man.” An aristocratic rake who loves the game of manipulating the lives of those around him, he callously kidnaps a Chechen teenager to be his bride, wagers the life of an inveterate gambler in a kind of philosophical Russian roulette, and engages in dangerous games with Crimean smugglers. “A Hero of Our Time” is really a collection of stories rather than a novel, culminating in the brilliant psychological novella “Princess Mary,” in which Pechorin toys tragically with the loves of two fragile women and sacrifices the life of his own friend for the sake of his own sociopathic amusement. In the process, he dissects his own motives with a kind of ruthless, surgical precision through which occasionally we see the human soul of a man in agony, who might not really want to be what he has become and who grieves over the loss of his own capacity for love and compassion. - Summary by Expatriate

In A Passion in the Desert, Honoré de Balzac crafts a haunting and unforgettable tale of isolation, survival, and the strange, fragile bond between man and nature. Set against the vast and merciless landscapes of the Egyptian desert during Napoleon's military campaign, this short yet powerful narrative explores the depths of human emotion under extreme circumstances.

The story follows a French soldier who, separated from his regiment during the Egyptian expedition, finds himself alone in the endless desert—exhausted, starving, and facing certain death. With no civilization in sight and the scorching sun bearing down upon him, he stumbles upon a hidden oasis that becomes his temporary refuge. But his sanctuary is not unoccupied. Within a rocky grotto lies a creature as magnificent as it is deadly—a panther.

What unfolds is a mesmerizing psychological drama. Rather than immediate violence, an unexpected relationship develops between the soldier and the wild animal. Through patience, instinct, and a strange mutual recognition, the two form a silent companionship born of necessity and solitude. The desert, stripped of human society and its conventions, becomes a stage where primal instincts, vulnerability, and tenderness coexist in delicate balance.

Balzac masterfully examines themes of loneliness, fear, trust, and the thin line between civilization and savagery. The soldier's emotional attachment to the panther blurs the boundaries between affection and danger, reason and instinct. Is their connection genuine, or merely a projection of a desperate mind craving companionship? In this stark wilderness, stripped of rank, identity, and societal structure, the soldier confronts his own humanity in its rawest form.

Through vivid imagery and lyrical prose, Balzac transforms the desert into both a physical and symbolic landscape—an expanse reflecting the emptiness, intensity, and unpredictability of the human heart. The story is not merely an adventure of survival, but a profound meditation on passion in its most elemental state: a force that can unite, sustain, and ultimately destroy.

Though brief, A Passion in the Desert stands as one of Balzac's most striking and unconventional works. It is a tale of psychological depth and poetic power, inviting readers to contemplate the nature of attachment, the instincts that govern us, and the fragile illusions we build to survive isolation.

For lovers of classic literature, philosophical fiction, and evocative storytelling, this remarkable narrative offers an intense and unforgettable journey into the heart of solitude—and the wild passions that arise when humanity stands alone.

Aspen didn’t know you could accidentally become Alpha of a Den, but that’s exactly what he just did.
Alpha bear shifter Aspen was ready to begin his new life in the big city. He has a job lined up, a lease signed, and his truck packed. All he has left is to get there. Too bad that’s easier said than done, because his truck picked the middle of nowhere to break down—alongside a bear den’s land of all places. When Aspen seeks permission to spend the night, he plans to keep his head down and just mind his own business and he does, until he hears the scream that changes everything.
Omega bear shifter Lucian hates his den. No, that isn’t fair. It isn’t the den he hates as much as the leadership. When the Alpha he had most of his life died, he crossed his fingers the new one would bring their den into this century. He didn’t—the new Alpha is not only old-school, but also cruel. When rumors of an alpha bear seeking refuge until his truck is repaired reach him, Lucien forms a plan. If he can convince the shifter to take him when he leaves, he can escape this horrible life.
Sneaking out to find the new bear sounded like a great idea, until Lucian gets caught. His den Alpha is a strike first kind of guy, and strike he does. Lucien knows better than to scream, as it only makes the punishments worse, but scream he does, the pain too much to hold inside. A flurry of fur and teeth, a dead Alpha, and the scenting of his fated mate leaves the visiting shifter as their new Alpha.
So much for best laid plans.
