Summary

All three books in John Broughton's 'Saint Cuthbert Trilogy', a series of historical fiction set in medieval England, now in one volume!

Heaven In A Wild Flower: In 7th century Northumbria, Aella survives war and gains the patronage of the king and friendship of Bishop Cuthbert. Commissioned to create a masterpiece for Lindisfarne, Aella impresses King Aldfrith who sends him to Ireland to learn to read and write. There, Aella makes friends, learns to illuminate manuscripts, and falls in love, but can he achieve his dreams and marry the love of his life?

The Horse-Thegn: Set in late 9th century Northumbria, where Viking attacks and Danish settlers are a constant threat, Cynn is a royal Horse-Thegn who aims to bring peace and integration to his estates. Charged by the king to end the violent attacks of a group led by the elusive Edred, Cynn faces open revolt against legitimate rule. In a kingdom facing external threats, can Cynn achieve his goal of a durable and prosperous future as they enter a new century?

The Master Of The Chevron: The third novel in John Broughton’s Saint Cuthbert trilogy follows the lifelong friendship of a studious monk and a bluff mason, Thurgot and Kenrick, respectively, after the Norman Conquest. Thurgot senses Kenrick’s destiny when he saves him from drowning near the Farne Isles, and their Christian beliefs and pragmatic talents help them overcome obstacles of revolt, persecution, and hardship in eleventh- and twelfth-century Northumbria. Their legacy is still present today in the work of the first master mason in Durham.

🌽 Farm-to-table restaurant owner and harvest festival organizer Harvest "Harry" Moon is preparing the town's annual Fall Harvest Festival when the festival's wealthy patron—a ruthless land developer—is found dead in the prize-winning pumpkin display, a cornucopia of autumn produce suspiciously arranged around the body. The police suspect a accidental collapse, but Harry notices the produce has been deliberately contaminated and the victim's land acquisition papers contain coded messages about farm foreclosures. With the harvest festival in jeopardy and the farming community in turmoil, Harry must reap the truth from this field of deception. Assisted by her restaurant staff and the handsome agricultural inspector analyzing the tainted produce, Harry uncovers a scheme involving crop sabotage, water rights theft, and a plot to force local farms into bankruptcy. From suspicious pesticide residues that reveal deliberate contamination to soil samples that don't match the farm's organic certification, every vegetable tells a story. But when Harry discovers the victim was systematically poisoning crops to devalue farmland for development, she realizes the killer is protecting family farms more precious than any real estate deal. With the harvest moon celebration approaching and the real saboteur still sowing chaos, Harry must gather the evidence before her own farm-to-table dream gets permanently plowed under.

Monsters That Once Were Men by Robert Silverberg - They were like creatures painted by a drunken artist, ghastly, utterly repulsive caricatures of humanity! Tet, twisted through they were, they were still human...
We were en route from Arenack to Delimon XI when some trouble developed in the gyroscopic drive stabilizers, and so we decided to lay over for repairs at the nearest planet. We weren't in any real hurry to get to Delimon XI, because we were flush from our last hauling job, and didn't need cash in a hurry.
That's our trade, you see—interstellar hauling. I've been a free-lance transport man for the last twenty-eight years, and I like the work just fine. I carry a crew of eight, charge top rates and get them too, and the work is pleasant if you have the right kind of disposition for it, which I happen to have.
But the events of that simple little stopover for stabilizer repairs nearly soured my disposition for good.
