Sinopsis

All three books in John Broughton's 'Saint Cuthbert Trilogy', a series of historical fiction set in medieval England, now in one volume!

Heaven In A Wild Flower: In 7th century Northumbria, Aella survives war and gains the patronage of the king and friendship of Bishop Cuthbert. Commissioned to create a masterpiece for Lindisfarne, Aella impresses King Aldfrith who sends him to Ireland to learn to read and write. There, Aella makes friends, learns to illuminate manuscripts, and falls in love, but can he achieve his dreams and marry the love of his life?

The Horse-Thegn: Set in late 9th century Northumbria, where Viking attacks and Danish settlers are a constant threat, Cynn is a royal Horse-Thegn who aims to bring peace and integration to his estates. Charged by the king to end the violent attacks of a group led by the elusive Edred, Cynn faces open revolt against legitimate rule. In a kingdom facing external threats, can Cynn achieve his goal of a durable and prosperous future as they enter a new century?

The Master Of The Chevron: The third novel in John Broughton’s Saint Cuthbert trilogy follows the lifelong friendship of a studious monk and a bluff mason, Thurgot and Kenrick, respectively, after the Norman Conquest. Thurgot senses Kenrick’s destiny when he saves him from drowning near the Farne Isles, and their Christian beliefs and pragmatic talents help them overcome obstacles of revolt, persecution, and hardship in eleventh- and twelfth-century Northumbria. Their legacy is still present today in the work of the first master mason in Durham.

I was heartbroken and oblivious the first time I met Warren Manning. I wasn’t a fan of country music, so I had no idea who he was.
We had a brief but heartfelt conversation, and Warren left my life as quickly as he entered it. A few months later I discovered just how famous he was. It was cool that I had met him once, but I figured I would never see him again.
    Thankfully, Warren had other plans.

Arthur C. Clarke’s A Walk in the Dark is a masterclass in mounting tension and cosmic isolation. When Robert Armstrong’s transport fails on a remote planet, he’s forced to trek through endless blackness to reach the port before his ship departs. What begins as a practical struggle soon becomes a test of sanity—because something unseen may be following in the dark.
Clarke captures the primal fear of the unknown and sets it against the vast emptiness of space. Through sparse detail and psychological realism, he transforms a simple walk into a harrowing journey that explores courage, logic, and the fragile boundaries of reason.
Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008) was one of the great architects of modern science fiction, blending visionary science with human introspection. The author of Childhood’s End, Rendezvous with Rama, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clarke’s imagination helped define our vision of the future. A scientist, inventor, and lifelong explorer of the cosmos, he remains a guiding light for anyone who looks to the stars and wonders what waits beyond.

These two stories by Kurt Vonnegut were written almost a decade apart but they are definitely connected. The Big Trip Up Yonder, published in Galaxy Science Fiction January 1954 is a comical yet scary description of what over population was going to do to society after aging was conquered and a simple daily dose of "anti-gerosone" would keep you forever the same age. Would Gramps EVER take 'That Big Trip Up Yonder', or would his hordes of descendants be stuck with him forever in a tiny apartment!?
2 B R 0 2 B, published in Worlds of If, January 1962 takes this basic situation many years into the future and a solution has been found. The population of the US has dropped from 40 billion to 40 million. Not what everyone would call a pretty solution, but nevertheless a solution to the population problem. I believe this is the type of story it is best to listen to, not describe, so enjoy.
