Summary

Joe Roberts stayed for five months with the Trivedis family in Bangalore, while travelling all over southern India. In Pondicherry he found Rita, a melancholic divorcee banished to an ashram. He saw the great temple at Madurai, watched the snakeboat races at Arunmala, stayed with Syriac Christians at Cochin and was offered heroin in a Jewish cemetery. Wherever he went he met extraordinary people, but these encounters take second place to his ripening friendship with the Trivedi family, and his exact chronicling of their neighbours. As Major Trividi warned him 'nothing is as fixed as you think'. Three-Quarters of a Footprint has long fascinated readers with its gentle, perceptive humour, chilled occasionally by a shadow of menace, as if the spirit and wit of R K Narayan had been reborn in an Englishman.

It was pure serendipity that we went on an African safari, but we are forever grateful that we did. We combined a visit with my brother and sister-in-law, a doctor and nurse volunteering at a hospital in Uganda, with a safari to Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Enjoy hearing about what it was like to volunteer at a hospital in a small town in Southwestern Uganda and the excitement and adventure of trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda, camel rides in the rugged northern frontier of Kenya, safaris in the magical "Green Hills" of Africa in Southeast Kenya, the lost world of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, the mysterious shifting sands of Tanzania, close encounters with wild animals on the Serengeti Plain, and the iconic Great Wildebeest Migration.

Meet the many different and interesting people we encountered on safari and learn about the fabulous eco-lodges we stayed at. Travel with us across East Africa in small planes and safari cars for the many wonderful experiences that made this the trip of a lifetime for us and our friends.

"Engaging" stories of what the Motor City was like before the invention of the motor (Detroit Metro-Times).

Long before it became the twentieth-century automotive capital, Detroit was a muddy port town full of grog shops, horse races, haphazard cemeteries, and enterprising bootstrappers from all over the world.

In this lively book you'll discover the city's forgotten history and meet a variety of unforgettable characters—the argumentative French fugitive who founded the city; the tobacco magnate who haunts his shuttered factory; the gambler prankster millionaire who built a monument to himself; the governor who brought his scholarly library with him on canoe expeditions; and the historians who helped create the story of Detroit as we know it: one of the oldest, rowdiest, and most enigmatic cities in the Midwest.

Some journeys change your destination. Others change you.
In The Road Teaches You, celebrated travel writer Reece Davis reflects on decades spent wandering across six continents — from dusty border crossings and rain-soaked bus rides to fleeting moments of human kindness that leave an indelible mark.
Through encounters with nomads, poets, fishermen, and strangers who became friends, Davis reveals how travel’s greatest lessons aren’t found in guidebooks or landmarks, but in the quiet wisdom of those met along the way.
Tender, honest, and deeply observant, The Road Teaches You is both a memoir and a meditation — an ode to curiosity, compassion, and the shared humanity that makes every road worth walking.
