Summary

London, March 1941. The Blitz continues to cast a shadow over the city's brightest spots such as the Café de Paris. Having narrowly escaped a devastating bomb attack on the nightclub, Detective Chief Inspector Coburg and Sergeant Lampson are called to the disused Lord's Underground station where the body of a man has been discovered.

The dead man was beaten to death by what may have been a cricket bat. Is he linked to the British Empire XI, made up of players from Great Britain and far-flung corners of the globe, who are playing at the world-famous Lord's Cricket Ground? Coburg and Lampson are certainly put in a spin by this complex case.

An intriguing novel of suspense that “recreates the beau monde of vintage Vienna with verisimilitude and consummate style” (Kirkus Reviews).   Vienna, 1901. With the police seemingly indifferent to the murder of a nineteen-year-old prostitute known as Mitzi, brothel-keeper Frau Mutzenbacher turns to lawyer Karl Werthen to find out what happened and bring her killer to justice. Yet the more he discovers about the mysterious Mitzi, with her secret past and impressive roster of clients, the more questions Werthen’s investigation throws up.   At the same time, Werthen undertakes a second commission: to find out who viciously assaulted playwright Arthur Schnitzler. Schnitzler believes his latest controversial play might have been the motive for the attack—but is there more to it than that?   As he navigates the highs and lows of Viennese society in dogged pursuit of the truth, Werthen finds himself drawn into a conspiracy of espionage and affairs of state.   “Top-notch detecting and characterizations bolster the intricate plot” (Publishers Weekly) of this superb fourth book in the Viennese Mystery series that is “not as widely known as it ought to be, [but] well worth a look” (Booklist).

A story that has fact, fiction, espionage, and high drama to make for an entertaining read that keeps the reader captivated for the length of the book. This audiobook fits into this mold perfectly as it has all the making of a thriller coupled with historical facts and a good dose of fiction to keep the reader enthralled and guessing to the very end. A truly delightful piece of writing that takes the listener on a journey back in time to the beginning of the Second World War, just after the Dunkirk evacuation. Winston Churchill was desperate; the German army was ripping its way through Europe, with France about to fall. Adding another world power into the fold was the only option.
