Summary

Dr. Jenny Reed, author and researcher behind The African American Parent: Rethinking Sex Education, is a social worker and African American evangelical Christian with over 25 years of experience in public health and child welfare. Throughout her career, she has conducted numerous interviews with individuals connected to the child welfare system—foster parents, abused children, alleged perpetrators, pregnant teens, and young mothers. These conversations were often sex-negative in tone and revealed a striking pattern: highly religious African American parents rarely engaged in open, informed discussions about sex with their children.Dr. Reed recognized that religious culture plays a central role in how African American families approach sexual health, often emphasizing silence, shame, or abstinence over education and open dialogue. This cultural dynamic, she observed, sometimes hinders teens from developing healthy, informed sexual behaviors. While Dr. Reed initially attributed her own limited sex education to being raised in a conservative, baby boomer era, her research confirmed that minimal parent-teen communication persists even in today's information age, reinforcing generational cycles of misinformation and poor outcomes. In her public health role, Dr. Reed witnessed firsthand the negative consequences of these communication gaps. Many teens made risky sexual decisions—such as not using contraception—due to a lack of guidance from their parents. The cycle of teen pregnancy, particularly among African American youth, continued without interruption. Motivated by these experiences, Dr. Reed turned her attention to exploring how faith, morality, and sex education intersect within the African American evangelical community.

The human brain is an impossibly complex and delicate instrument—capable of extraordinary calculations, abundant creativity, and linguistic dexterity. But the brain is not just the most brilliant of evolutionary wonders. It's also one of the most bizarre.

This book shows a whole other side of how brains work—from the patient who is afraid to take a shower because she fears her body will slip down the drain to a man who is convinced he is a cat and a woman who compulsively snacks on cigarette ashes.

As fascinating as they are, the cases discussed in this book are more than just oddities. In attempting to understand them, neuroscientists have uncovered important details about how the brain works. You'll be intrigued and amazed by some of the weird things your brain does on a daily basis, seemingly without your awareness or consent, and maybe you'll even gain an increased appreciation for the stability of the reality you experience. This book is ideal both for listeners seeking a better appreciation of the inner workings of the brain and those who simply want some extraordinary topics for dinner-party conversation.

"A perfect gift for the age of Trump." - Robin D. G. Kelley, Author, Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination
"In this marvelous, enormously instructive book, Jordan Flaherty explores how we too often allow the struggle for change to be undermined by would-be saviors—and how today’s grassroots social movements, led by communities on the frontlines of crisis, are charting a far more powerful path forward." – Naomi Klein, Author, This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine
Our media and education system often tells us that that generous white people are the solution...but what if they are the problem? How can we build a better world? And why do so many people with privilege end up making things worse when they try to help? From the Crusades to Black Lives Matter, No More Heroes is a grassroots history of resistance to the savior mentality. This book weaves the stories of teachers, international volunteers, sex workers, FBI informants, indigenous organizers, and prison abolitionists into a narrative of revolutionary change that travels from Alaska to Palestine, from Karl Marx to Muhammad Ali, and from KONY 2012 to the Red Cross. No More Heroes brings us real life stories of life-or-death conflict: the mysterious death of Riad Hamad, a Lebanese middle school teacher in Austin, Texas, and his connection to FBI informant Brandon Darby. Monica Jones, a Black transgender sex work activist arrested for “walking while trans” in Phoenix, Arizona. Haidar Eid, a professor in Gaza City. Sophie Lucido Johnson, an idealistic young white teacher in New Orleans. Nelini Stamp, an Occupy Wall Street activist. No More Heroes looks at the people behind the uprisings of the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and Black Lives Matter, and shows how change happens.
"Buy this book if you believe a better world is possible and want to know how to get there." - Cynthia McKinney, Former Georgia Congresswoman and presidential candidate
