Summary

"Skeleton Lake" unravels the mystery of Roopkund Lake, a high-altitude Himalayan lake famed for the hundreds of human skeletons surrounding its shores. Rejecting simple explanations, the book argues that these remains are not the result of a single catastrophic event, but rather multiple incidents occurring over centuries. This conclusion comes from synthesizing Earth Sciences, Geography, and History to examine archaeological findings, DNA analysis, radiocarbon dating, and climatological research. The book presents a detailed investigation, beginning with the lake's geography and the discovery of the skeletons. DNA analyses revealed that the skeletons belong to distinct groups, including individuals with Mediterranean ancestry and local South Asians, while radiocarbon dating spans centuries. The book uniquely integrates climatological research, exploring extreme weather events in the Himalayas that may have contributed to these deaths. By combining these diverse pieces of evidence, "Skeleton Lake" provides a comprehensive and accessible account of this intriguing unsolved mystery. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, starting with the initial discovery and archaeological context, progressing through DNA and radiocarbon analysis, and culminating in a climatological examination. This approach moves beyond speculation, offering a data-driven interpretation that appeals to those interested in archaeology, ancient history, and the challenges of reconstructing past events. The book emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in understanding human migration, climate change impacts, and the interpretation of archaeological evidence.

High Adventure A Narrative of Air Fighting in France by James Norman Hall; you will find this book although an exciting narrative has an unpolished feel because it was published in June of 1918 while Mr. Hall was a captive in a German POW camp. When he was captured behind enemy lines, the book was still a work in progress. The Armistice would not be reached until November of that year.
Although he does not mention it in this book, Mr. Hall had already served the better part of 15 months with the British Expeditionary Forces, surviving the battle of Loos in Sept – Oct 1915, and upon which his excellent work “Kitchener’s” Mob is Based.
The US did not enter the war until April 1917, and Hall had already served nearly three years as an American with British and French forces, as a machine gunner with the British, and as a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille.
Pilot training in the French Air Corps was primarily a matter of survival. Visualize if you will, a class of “Penguins”, aircraft with wings too short for flight scurrying about the airfield as student pilots learn to control these machines with no instructor on board, and for that matter in Mr. Halls case there was never an instructor on board. Their solo flight was their first flight. They learned by doing.
The sheer joy and wonder of man’s early experience of leaving the bounds of Earth in an aircraft coupled with the danger and excitement of air combat made “High Adventure” such a good read, I completed the narration ahead of schedule, because I couldn’t put it down.

This authoritative primer lays out everything you need to know to understand today's global food landscape.

The third edition of Food Politics has been updated to reflect the latest developments and research on today's global food landscape, including the realities of food markets, farm production methods, food manufacturing, and dietary health challenges. New material covers the rise of China in world food markets and global food politics, the unabated and increasing risks to farming from climate change, the impact COVID-19 had on incomes and hunger, the equally shocking impact from the war in Ukraine on food prices and trade, and surprising scientific and technical breakthroughs such as the genome editing of crops (CRISPR) and the marketing of cell-cultured (animal-free) meats. Each chapter has been updated with new data on population growth, hunger and food security, trade conflicts, humanitarian aid, carbon farming, regenerative agriculture, holistic grazing, animal welfare, genetically engineered food, and more.

Discussing the politics and policies that continue to shape our contemporary food system, Robert Paarlberg challenges myths and critiques more than a few of today's fashionable beliefs about farming and food. A must-listen for those ready to have their thinking about food politics informed, but also challenged.

For the first time, a collection of testimonials gives voice to the children of lesbian couples. Sixteen of them answer the questions many people ask: does living without a father pose a problem? Do children of gay couples necessarily become gay or lesbian? Do their families share the same values as others?
The interviewees were aged between eleven and thirty-one. They were conceived either by insemination or during previous relationships. Today, they are students, police officers or producers. They have agreed to confide in us their joys, their worries, their troubles, their hopes and the way “others” look at them.
