Summary

When Tovian Reed meets a shy new neighbor across the fence, he and his creative friend Aurelia Nor launch the Sharing Smiles Club—a team devoted to brightening each day with simple acts of kindness and proper manners. Their first project sends surprise breakfast notes reminding friends to say “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.” Soon, members host polite tea parties for neighborhood pets, craft encouraging compliments, and volunteer at a local shelter. Through respectful leadership, patient listening, and playful challenges, they learn empathy, responsibility, time management, and fair play. By season’s end, their community sparkles with courtesy, showing that every smile grows stronger when shared.

In the cold village of River Banks, a beautiful girl Meredith, lost her eyesight to the tragedy of war. Her mother clung to a glimmer of hope, of an old folklore that travelled in whispers around the town of a witch who crafted wooden masks, bound with magic so powerful that whoever wore them would see the world in a different light. The tale promised that anyone who was blind would see again, but the stories all warned of a terrible cost and ended with the same eerie words: A mask may be taken but a life must be given.

Every day, we use plastic products. And where do these items go when we are done with them?

When artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi found plastic trash polluting the beach near her home, she took action. She formed an organization called Washed Ashore and started gathering trash from beaches and using it to create incredible sculptures of wildlife. These sculptures travel the country to teach people about the importance of these animals—and the problems caused by plastic pollution.

Author and photographer Kelly Crull highlights fourteen spectacular sculptures, along with hints to find common objects hidden among the debris. There’s information about each ocean animal as well as tips for how you can reduce your plastic use, hold a beach cleanup and make your own plastic art. Be inspired to get creative in protecting the world’s oceans!
