Sinopsis

Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is a masterful exploration of early 19th-century English society, focusing on the complex interplay of love, class, and individuality. The novel artfully combines keen social commentary with sharp wit, employing free indirect discourse that allows readers to intimately understand its characters' thoughts and perspectives'Äîmost notably that of the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet. As the narrative unfolds, the reader is drawn into a world where courtship is laden with social expectations, revealing the intricacies of personal relationships against the backdrop of a rapidly changing society. Austen, who lived from 1775 to 1817, was a pioneer of the novel form, influenced by her own experiences and observations of domestic life in the gentry. Deeply aware of women's roles within her cultural context, Austen used her novels to challenge societal norms, especially regarding marriage and economic security. "Pride and Prejudice" showcases her skill in creating iconic characters and offers an incisive critique of the class structure of her time, reflecting her belief in love and merit over social conventions. This timeless classic is highly recommended for those interested in literature that deftly examines the human condition while providing historical insight. Its rich character development and enduring themes make it a relevant and enjoyable read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of relationships and societal expectations.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874 - April 24, 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following.
The Genesis of the Doughnut Club: When John Henry died there seemed to be nothing for me to do but pack up and go back east. I didn't want to do it, but forty-five years of sojourning in this world have taught me that a body has to do a good many things she doesn't want to do, and that most of them turn out to be for the best in the long run.

Frank Richard Stockton was born in Philadelphia on 5th April 1834.
His father, a Methodist minister, discouraged Stockton’s literary career from an early age. Feeling unable to go against those wishes it was for many years that Stockton’s income was maintained as a wood engraver.
His first work was published in 1867 and his first collection only appeared in 1870. Despite this late arrival Stockton’s innovative and often far-fetched stories, with a gentle ‘poking fun’ humour were very popular. Like his contemporary Mark Twain he avoided the scolding, hectoring and moral tones of many other authors and instead gently teased and cajoled his reader to open their eyes to the ills, the greed and the ambitions of the world around them. His sci-fi stories in particular were far-seeing and inventive including a tale of negative gravity and a bloodless Anglo-US war won by technological feats.
Perhaps his most enduring tale though is ‘The Lady, or the Tiger?’ from 1882. A condemned man is given a choice of being eaten alive or marrying his princess lover. But he has to choose which door each is behind.
Frank R Stockton died in Washington, DC, on 20th April 1902, of a cerebral haemorrhage. He is buried at The Woodlands in Philadelphia.
