Some journeys change your destination. Others change you.
In The Road Teaches You, celebrated travel writer Reece Davis reflects on decades spent wandering across six continents — from dusty border crossings and rain-soaked bus rides to fleeting moments of human kindness that leave an indelible mark.
Through encounters with nomads, poets, fishermen, and strangers who became friends, Davis reveals how travel’s greatest lessons aren’t found in guidebooks or landmarks, but in the quiet wisdom of those met along the way.
Tender, honest, and deeply observant, The Road Teaches You is both a memoir and a meditation — an ode to curiosity, compassion, and the shared humanity that makes every road worth walking.

In 1955 the winds of change were beginning to blow across the Sultanate of Oman, a hitherto truly medieval state. Rumours of subversion mingled with the unsettling smell of oil to propel the Sultan on a royal progress across the desert hinterland, from his southern capital of Salala to the northern capital of Muscat. It was an historic journey – the first crossing of the Omani desert by motorcar. Jan Morris accompanied His Highness Sultan Said bin Taimur as a professional observer, and was inspired by the experience to write her major work of imperial history, the Pax Britannica trilogy.

David Lynch's 1984 film Dune is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel, set in the distant future, involving a conflict for control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange. The film stars Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, whose family takes control of Arrakis, leading to a battle with House Harkonnen. The film, shot in Mexico, faced numerous production issues. It was a box office failure, grossing $30.9 million against a $40–42 million budget. Critics gave it negative reviews for its confusing plot, though some appreciated Lynch's visuals. Despite the negative reception, the film has gained a cult following.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

The 1984 film Dune was directed by David Lynch, who also wrote the screenplay based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel. The movie was filmed at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City and featured a soundtrack by the band Toto with a contribution from Brian Eno.

Dune is set in the distant future and centers around a conflict between noble families fighting for control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange. The spice is essential for space travel and grants prescience, making it the most valuable commodity in the universe.

Paul Atreides, the main character, is the heir of a powerful noble family that is given control of Arrakis, which puts them in direct conflict with the former overlords, House Harkonnen. Paul is also believed to be the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure prophesized by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
