Summary

In “Beta,” a monster terrorizes an isolated village in the mountains of Eastern Europe, draining the blood of its victims, leaving them frozen in the snow. The villagers hunt wolves, decapitate “vampires,” but the murders continue. As each new body is found, the residents grow more and more paranoid. The cobbler’s son decides to investigate, uncovering a horror that puts him in grave danger. Who will be next? Will it ever end? In “Salvation,” a young girl and her friends discover a Federal soldier lying up against the fence that shelters her village from the outside world. She’ll tell the adults about the soldier, but the kind of help they’ll give him isn’t the kind he wants. In "City of Salt," a desperate man searches for salt in a post-apocalyptic city, despite the mutants that lurk the streets, hunting for human flesh. In "Prey," an old man with discovers a gruesome new fertilizer for his beloved flowers. And in Raleigh's Prep., a novel, Topher, Michael, and Kenneth find a mangled body on the rugby field of their new school. They decide to investigate-- inadvertently unleashing the horror that lurks in the woods that surrounds the campus. These are just a few of the macabre stories found within. Enter-- IF YOU DARE!

William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author. He produced a large body of work including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction stories. "The Voice in the Night" is an uncanny story about a ship becalmed in fog in the middle of the Pacific. In the night, the watch hears a voice hailing the ship. It would seem to be a lone man in a rowing boat, but the individual does not wish to be seen. He is starving and urgently wants them to give him food - but despite this, he will not approach the ship and vehemently rejects the idea of being rescued. Instead they have to float some provisions out to him in a crate, which he takes off to a nearby island where his fiancée is dying of hunger. A few hours later he returns and tells a horrifying and incredible tale.

In this set of "Uncanny Tales," Mary Louisa Molesworth deftly makes us feel the shiver of ghostly mystery without actually giving us a ghost! Or, to put it another way, she's interested in a different kind of ghostly presence. In "The Man with the Cough", it is the ghostly presence of a secret agent, and the ghostly experience of events that seem like a dream, but have real-world consequences. In "Halfway Between the Stiles", it is the ghostly presence of old memories of love that will not die away, and again, the real world responds. In "Will Not Take Place", it is a man who almost becomes a ghost, so thoroughly does he cut himself off from friends, family and the woman he loves. And in "The Clock that Struck Thirteen", a woman finds that the man she loves can become a ghostly presence, influencing her life behind the scenes.Molesworth makes you shiver, but she also makes you laugh, and she even makes you think about the mysteries of the world.
