Summary

A money-hungry ex-soldier in Civil War New Orleans is seduced into a web of treason and temptation in this novel by “one of the greats of American noir” (The Guardian).

The Union has captured New Orleans, and Bill Cresap has come to reap the profits. A school friend has a line on some easy money, and Cresap is eager to make his fortune. But when he lands in the Crescent City, still nursing a leg wound from Chancellorsville, he finds that his friend has vanished and taken their start-up capital with him. Just when despair threatens to overpower Cresap, Mignon Fournet arrives to overwhelm him instead. A Creole widow with rebel sympathies and hopeful eyes, she has come to Cresap in desperate need. The army has arrested her father and she will do whatever it takes to find out where he’s detained and what he’s charged with. She begs Cresap to use his army connections to find him. Cresap soon discovers that the stakes are sky high: Fournet’s father shipped supplies to the Confederate commander and could pay for this treason with his life. Dazzled by Fournet, Cresap agrees to help free her father. Although the veteran’s army days are behind him, his war is just starting to heat up…

Blue Deer, Montana, may seem like a tranquil town nestled at the foot of the Crazy Mountains, but an influx of writers, artists, and actors has driven its inhabitants a little nuts. When someone uses a rifle on George Blackwater as he's working on his new screenplay, Sheriff Jules Clement figures the culprit is George's angry wife, Mona, who has been on the rampage since George's latest batch of affairs. But soon the number of killings multiplies, and Jules is surrounded by a variety of suspects, including George himself, still unhinged by something that happened twenty years ago. As Jules reluctantly digs into the seamy side of his hometown, he finds himself swamped by bad dreams, bad press, and an increasing distaste for his job.

No human being is perfect. But suppose we were able to create machines which are like humans only better? Cleverer, more beautiful, more empathetic, more rational....
The Universal Robotics Corporation is busy greening the desert but empathetic humanoid robots are also in development. The decision to trial them to resolve a dysfunctional marriage ends in catastrophe. When the experiment is extended to three young, single employees it exposes their differing attitudes to relationships and the opposite sex. Agronomist Stella Mayfield's concerns aren't shared by the male participants. Seven years on, Stella is back in the UK. Humanoid robots are everywhere and a robot is caring for her elderly mother. The unease Stella felt in the desert returns.
HC Denham gives a unique, often humorous insight into the attitudes of males and females to relationships with the opposite sex and to humanoid AI as it permeates society. But the question hangs in the air:
