Summary

James Fergusson's "A History of Architecture in all Countries, Volumes 1 and 2" is a monumental survey that takes readers on a journey through architectural styles, traditions, and innovations from diverse cultures around the globe. Written with a meticulous attention to detail, Fergusson employs a clear and engaging narrative style, underpinned by rich illustrations and historical context. The work not only documents the evolution of architectural practices from ancient to modern times but also rigorously analyzes the influences of geography, culture, and technology on the built environment. Fergusson's pioneering approach makes this text a significant contribution to the field of architectural history, positioning it amidst the shifting paradigms of 19th-century scholarship. Fergusson, a Scottish architect and architectural historian, was notably influenced by his travels across Europe and Asia. His first-hand observations and scholarly curiosity enabled him to approach architecture from a comparative and holistic perspective. By intertwining art, society, and engineering, he aspired to provide a comprehensive account that transcended mere stylistic categorization, setting a new standard for architectural histories. Fergusson'Äôs expertise reflects the historical context of his time, where the appreciation for non-Western architectures began to grow. This exhaustive tome is indispensable for anyone passionate about architecture, history, or cultural studies. Scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike will find in Fergusson'Äôs work not only a rich resource of knowledge but also a lens through which the interconnectedness of global architectural heritage can be deeply appreciated. It might seem odd—a punk band introducing poetry into someone's life. But what if this lyrical influence was the reason you became a writer in the first place?

Days and Days weaves together two stories. One is a tale of friendship and self-discovery that occurs during a backpacking adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. The other celebrates the highly influential yet underestimated United Kingdom band Leatherface, a group that The Guardian called "the greatest British punk band of the modern era." Without so much as a single hostel booked, Chris MacDonald and his friend Jason cross the Atlantic. They sleep in train stations, endure a haunting on top of a volcano in Edinburgh, are driven out of Belfast by the IRA, and witness the mother of all storms. They also find themselves in the rehearsal space of their teenage punk idols, a building steeped in cultural significance for the Sunderland music scene.

Days and Days is about the silver thread that connects us even after drifting apart. It's a story about forgiveness and reflection, how beauty can be found within callous cladding. Leatherface band members, colleagues, and friends generously share personal insights that guide the listener into the melancholy, darkness, and humor that surround Sunderland's best-kept secret.

The Qin state emerged as one of the most formidable powers during the Warring States Period, a time of intense conflict and political fragmentation in ancient China. Situated in the western frontier, Qin was once considered a relatively backward state compared to its eastern rivals. However, through strategic reforms, military innovations, and a firm commitment to Legalist principles, Qin transformed itself into the dominant force that would eventually unify China.
One of the key factors in Qin’s rise was the implementation of Legalist policies under the statesman Shang Yang. In the fourth century BCE, Shang Yang introduced a series of reforms that fundamentally reshaped Qin society. These policies emphasized strict laws, centralized authority, and merit-based advancements. Land ownership was restructured to allow farmers more direct control over their land, encouraging agricultural productivity and economic growth. At the same time, a rigid legal code was enforced, ensuring discipline among the population while diminishing the power of aristocratic families. By weakening the influence of hereditary nobles and promoting individuals based on their abilities, Shang Yang’s reforms created a more efficient and loyal administrative system that strengthened Qin’s central government.
The military advancements of Qin also played a crucial role in its ascendance. Unlike other states that relied heavily on noble warriors, Qin adopted a professional army system that allowed for greater discipline and efficiency. The state implemented mass conscription, ensuring a steady supply of soldiers trained under strict military codes. Advanced weaponry, including iron swords and crossbows, gave Qin troops a significant advantage on the battlefield. Additionally, the construction of an extensive road network allowed for rapid troop movements, enabling Qin forces to respond quickly to threats and expand their territorial control.

    'Fantastic' – James O'Brien
The brilliant mind behind the Secret Tory presents 14 years of Tory rule – as told by William Shakespeare
'O, for a muse of fire that would ascend
    The brightest heaven of pretention!
A kingdom for a stage, Tories to act,
Oligarchs to behold the swelling scene!’
So begins The Tories: A Tragedy. In this brilliant new work of political satire, Henry Morris presents fourteen years of Conservative (mis)rule in the only form in which such misfortunes could be portrayed: as a Shakespearean play.
In five acts that take in five prime ministers, The Tories: A Tragedy is a captivatingly realised Jacobean tragedy, replete with Machiavellian manoeuvrings, hilarious mechanicals and poignant verse. Publishing in the shadow of the most significant election since the Tories came to power in 2010, this exhilarating, original book is an alternative history of a disastrous reign – a drama that will appeal to those who love Shakespeare, comedy, Shakespeare’s comedies, and those who simply love to laugh at the Tory party.
With a keen eye for parodies and humor, Morris masterfully weaves ideologies of conservatism and liberalism into a theater of politics. His playwriting process, a performing art in itself, brings to life the parties and their top players in a non-fiction narrative that is as entertaining as it is enlightening.
For fans of Robert Jobson (Diana), Rory Stewart (The Marches), Richard Osman (The World Cup Of Everything), The Secret Barrister (Nothing But The Truth), and Tina Brown (The Palace Papers).

This program is read by the author with a special appearance from his mom.An intimate and light-hearted memoir by viral sensation and three-time Emmy-nominated musical comedian Randy Rainbow that takes readers through his life—the highs, the lows, the lipstick, the pink glasses, and the show tunes.Randy Rainbow, the man who conquered the Internet with a stylish pair of pink glasses, an inexhaustible knowledge of Broadway musicals, and the most gimlet-eyed view of American politics this side of Mark Twain finally tells all in Playing with Myself, a memoir sure to cause more than a few readers to begin singing one of his greatest hits like “A Spoonful of Clorox” or “Cover Your Freakin’ Face.”As Randy has said, “There’s so much fake news out there about me. I can’t wait to set the record straight and finally give people a peek behind the green screen.” And set the record straight he does. Playing with Myself is a first-hand account of the journey that led Randy Rainbow from his childhood as the over-imaginative, often misunderstood little boy who carried a purse in the second grade to his first job on Broadway as the host at Hooters and on to the creation of his trademark comedy character. In chapters titled “Pajama Bottoms” (a look back at the days when he wore pajama bottoms on his head to pretend he was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz), “Yes, It’s My Real Name, Shut Up!” (no explanation necessary...) and “Pink Glasses” (a rose-colored homage to his favorite accessory), Playing with Myself is a memoir that answers the question “Can an introverted musical theatre nerd with a MacBook and a dream save the world, one show tune at a time?”A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press.
