Sinopsis

Megalithic Quarrying Methods explores how ancient civilizations, lacking modern technology, quarried, moved, and erected massive stone structures. It investigates the sophisticated techniques used to extract colossal blocks, often weighing tons, and transport them across vast distances. The book reveals that successful megalithic construction depended on understanding material properties, innovative tool designs, and organized labor, challenging the perception of ancient builders as primitive.

The book examines quarrying methods across different regions and geological conditions, using archaeological excavations and geological surveys as evidence. It highlights experimental archaeology, where replicating ancient techniques provides insights into the practical challenges faced by builders. For example, researchers have recreated ancient methods to understand how Egyptians moved massive stones for the Pyramids.

The book progresses by first introducing stone types, then detailing quarrying methods, analyzing transportation techniques, and finally examining the societal impacts of megalithic construction. It bridges archaeology, engineering, and history, offering a comprehensive understanding of ancient technology and construction.

Affectionately known as the Queen Mother, she was born a commoner and never expected to be Queen. Yet, her life was forever changed with the abdication of her brother-in-law, Edward VIII, and she rose to become one of the most popular royal figures.

Helen Cathcart's fascinatingly intimate account charts the life of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, from her birth and early years, to her courtship and marriage to the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, through the abdication crisis, and later period as Queen consort, before giving insight into the first forty years of her life as Queen Mother after her daughter, Elizabeth II, had ascended to the throne.

During her long life the Queen Mother witnessed numerous challenges to her nation, including two world wars and the decline of British power, yet, as Cathcart reveals, she remained an unwavering pillar of support to both her husband and her daughter through these difficult times.

Drawing information from family letters, royal journals, and the personal recollections, The Queen Mother is an exceptionally detailed picture of one of the most influential women of the twentieth century.

As the issue of slavery roiled the country, few people became as controversial or consequential as Nat Turner, who was one of millions of slaves in the South before the Civil War but ultimately led the nation’s most notorious slave uprising. In August 1831, Turner led a rebellion that terrorized Virginia for several days, killing dozens of whites and freeing slaves as his band moved from plantation to plantation. The Richmond Enquirer reported, “A fanatic preacher by the name of Nat Turner (Gen. Nat Turner) who had been taught to read and write, and permitted to go about preaching in the country, was at the bottom of this infernal brigandage. He was artful, impudent and vindicative, without any cause or provocation, that could be assigned.” Even after the uprising was put down, Turner evaded capture for a few months, and after he was captured, his “confessions” were taken down and published before he was executed. Virginia would put a total of 56 slaves to death for the uprising.
While Turner’s rebellion remains famous today, a far larger uprising took place a generation earlier. In January 1811, hundreds of slaves in Louisiana attempted to make a new beginning for themselves or die trying. Armed with muskets, cane knives, and axes, and wearing stolen United States militia uniforms, they set out to conquer the city of New Orleans. The goal was to establish a free republic where slavery was outlawed and blacks had control over their own lives. Understandably discontented with their status and no longer willing to accept it, they were ready to engage in extreme violence to win their freedom. Despite being unsuccessful in overthrowing the system, the German Coast Uprising showed a level of organization, leadership, and coordination unseen before by slaves in America, and it was totally unexpected by white owners and officials, which made it a precursor to its much more famous successor.

The Mexican Revolution was a great revolution that included a series of army local battles instead of a single united struggle. It destroyed the Federal Force and changed it with an innovative army, changing Mexican civilization and governance at the same time It also culminated in the adoption of a new constitution that included the revolutionaries' ideal visions.
In spite of the fact that President Porfirio Daz's (from about 1880 to 1911) rule had grown progressively out of favor over the prior 31 years, there was no indicator that a transformation would break out in the year 1910.
Daz was not able to establish a regulated resolution to governmental succession, which led to a power struggle between opposing elites, and between elites and the middle classes, which sometimes included the "masses."
There were agrarian uprisings, most significantly in Morelos under Emiliano Zapata.
In this book, we will learn more about those.
