Summary

As children, we are led to believe there are monsters in the darkness. It has ill-prepared us for the monsters that walk among us in the light.

For years, the sickness grew inside him. Stronger. Needful of its want. He knew what it was, and knew that it was wrong. But he was weak. Desire, lust, perversion - this was his sickness.

Alfred was a normal man to any who might see him walking by; no one would ever believe the darkness that lingered just below the surface. An evil lingered there - one he was about to let out.

The first girl was meant to be the only one, but she failed him, and so did the next. Or maybe he had failed them?

Even so, he would not stop until he found the one that would complete him.

Jesse McDermitt lives alone on an isolated island in the Florida Keys where he runs a charter fishing business. Retired from the Marine Corps for six years, he wants nothing more than to relax, fish, dive and enjoy the laid back lifestyle of the islands.
Russ, his former Platoon Sergeant and old friend, dies unexpectedly in a mysterious scuba diving accident and Jesse becomes suspicious. When his friend's son comes to south Florida to ask Jesse if he would take him to a remote reef to spread his father's ashes, the two men discover that Russ was murdered and agree to hunt down the psychotic killer together, unaware that their manhunt will lead them to a Caribbean terrorist cell.
Meanwhile, a beautiful woman has returned to the Keys on a manhunt of her own, distracting Jesse with the idea that he could finally leave his warrior past behind. The prospect of finding lost Confederate gold, several high speed boat chases, and dodging demented killers, won't stop Jesse from revenge. Surviving a powerful hurricane puts everything on hold as a top secret government agency tries to recruit him into their fold.
When the sun comes back out, will Jesse be ready?

From the Preface - In these modern times of breathless hurry and great combines, when birth counts for nothing; when fortunes are made in a day and credit Is lost in an hour, men’s secrets are sometimes very strange ones. It is one of these which I have here revealed; one that will, I anticipate, both startle and puzzle the reader. The mystery is, in fact, one taken from the daily life about us, the truth concerning it having hitherto been regarded as strictly confidential by the persons herein mentioned, although I am now permitted by them to make the remarkable circumstances public. People are the new currency. And in a town this corrupt, the exchange rate is blood.
Former soldier Lindsey Ryan is no stranger to war, but her newest battlefield is the doorstep of her own home. She’s been trying to bury her PTSD in the shadows of Cobh in Cork, but Lena is a living reminder that some wars never end.
The enemy has a name: Patrick Adebayo. He’s a kingpin who treats human lives like cargo. When Lindsey discovers a child is being smuggled into Adebayo’s stronghold, the time for doing nothing is over.
