Sinopse

Social Trust Patterns explores the crucial role of social trust in fostering societal cohesion, economic prosperity, and political stability. It examines how networks of trust, often referred to as social capital, influence various aspects of society, from economic transactions to public health. The book argues that trust isn't static but evolves through social interactions, institutional frameworks, and cultural norms. One intriguing aspect is its examination of how trust networks have been reshaped by urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. The book uniquely integrates insights from psychology, political science, and economics to offer a comprehensive understanding of trust. It progresses from micro-level foundations, such as individual trust beliefs, to meso-level analyses of trust within organizations and communities, and finally to macro-level investigations of political and economic systems.

Evidence is drawn from diverse sources, including surveys, experiments, and historical analyses, to analyze group behavior and the dynamics of trust patterns. This approach helps readers understand the interplay between individual choices and broader social constraints. The book also highlights the importance of balancing trust with critical thinking, acknowledging the dangers of blind trust. By understanding the factors that influence trust, policymakers, community leaders, and individuals can work to build stronger, more collaborative societies and address contemporary challenges like rising inequality and political polarization.

Spend twenty-four hours with the ancient Chinese.

Travel back to AD 17, during the fourth year of the reign of Wang Mang of the Han dynasty, a vibrant and innovative era full of conflicts and contradictions. But as different as the Han culture might have been to other great ancient civilizations, the inhabitants of ancient China faced the same problems as people have for time immemorial: earning enough money, coping with workplace dramas, and keeping your home in order—although the equivalent in this era was more about bribing inspectors, avoiding bullying from abusive watchmen, and trying to keep your house from being looted by Huns.

In each chapter we meet one of twenty-four citizens of this ancient culture, from the midwife to the soldier, the priest to the performer, and the blacksmith to the tomb looter, and see what an average day in ancient China was really like.

Scars on the Land is the first comprehensive history of American slavery to examine how the environment fundamentally formed enslaved people's lives and how slavery remade the Southern landscape. Over two centuries, from the establishment of slavery in the Chesapeake to the Civil War, one simple calculation had profound consequences: rather than measuring productivity based on outputs per acre, Southern planters sought to maximize how much labor they could extract from their enslaved workforce. They saw the landscape as disposable, relocating to more fertile prospects once they had leached the soils and cut down the forests. On the leading edge of the frontier, slavery laid waste to fragile ecosystems, draining swamps, clearing forests to plant crops and fuel steamships, and introducing devastating invasive species. On its trailing edge, slavery left eroded hillsides, rivers clogged with sterile soil, and the extinction of native species. While environmental destruction fueled slavery's expansion, no environment could long survive intensive slave labor. The scars manifested themselves in different ways, but the land too fell victim to the slave owner's lash.

    Afghanistan, 1839.

The British East India Company dominated the Indian subcontinent, yet they were not secure in their position.

Holding unjustified fears that Russia threatened India's north-western border, the Company decided to make a pre-emptive strike and ensure that this menace would be stopped by a strong pro-British Afghanistan.

Thousands of British and Indian troops invaded this mountainous land to intervene in a succession dispute between emir Dost Mahommed Khan and former emir Shah Shuja-ool-Mulk. After capturing Kabul they placed the cruel, but pro-British Shah Shuja upon the throne once again, and supported him with an overwhelming military presence.

However, the proud and ruthless warriors of Afghanistan were unwilling to submit themselves to British control and within three years they had risen up against their oppressors in one of the bloodiest revolts in history.

George Bruce delves into a vast array of published and unpublished nineteenth century sources to uncover this campaign in which very few British survivors made it back through the snow-laden passes to India.

In the shadows of other dimensions, there lies a nefarious force waging war upon humans from the space between spaces for millennia, a dark force that governs not just our thoughts and actions but our very souls. The very advent of time began the slave master hierarchy between us and those unseen forces behind our every action and thought. They built and created "rules" and systems of thought, created kingdoms and spawned religions used to rule the masses from afar by controlling the ebb and flow of space and time on an epic level. Under the guise of "free will" and individualism the systems in place around us actually ensures that we have no choice but to comply and obey an underlying agenda that’s at its core is evil, put in place by beings that feed and are nurtured by the control they maintain over planet earth.

This is the story of the real Men in Black.
