Sinossi

Social Trust Patterns explores the crucial role of social trust in fostering societal cohesion, economic prosperity, and political stability. It examines how networks of trust, often referred to as social capital, influence various aspects of society, from economic transactions to public health. The book argues that trust isn't static but evolves through social interactions, institutional frameworks, and cultural norms. One intriguing aspect is its examination of how trust networks have been reshaped by urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. The book uniquely integrates insights from psychology, political science, and economics to offer a comprehensive understanding of trust. It progresses from micro-level foundations, such as individual trust beliefs, to meso-level analyses of trust within organizations and communities, and finally to macro-level investigations of political and economic systems.

Evidence is drawn from diverse sources, including surveys, experiments, and historical analyses, to analyze group behavior and the dynamics of trust patterns. This approach helps readers understand the interplay between individual choices and broader social constraints. The book also highlights the importance of balancing trust with critical thinking, acknowledging the dangers of blind trust. By understanding the factors that influence trust, policymakers, community leaders, and individuals can work to build stronger, more collaborative societies and address contemporary challenges like rising inequality and political polarization.

What is poverty? What is inequality? How are they connected? How are they reproduced? How might they be overcome? Why should we try?The way we frame our questions shapes the way we see solutions. This book does what appears to be a no-brainer task, but one that is missing and important: it asks readers to pose questions in different ways, to shift the vantage point from which they view 'common sense,' and in so doing, to see themselves as part of problems and potential solutions. This is a book about how seeing poverty entails confronting inequality. It is about how acknowledging poverty and inequality leads to uncomfortable revelations about our society and ourselves. And it is about how once we see, we cannot, must not, unsee. This New Edition of This Is What Inequality Looks Like by Teo You Yenn features a new Afterword by the author, and a Foreword by Kwok Kian Woon, Professor of Sociology at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.© 2018 by Teo You Yenn. Inequality has been present through human history, but it has changed dramatically in the past couple of decades. In A Brief History of Equality (2021), Thomas Piketty, a leading French economist, lays out the history of equality in the most recent centuries. With an optimistic point of view, he especially focuses on movements and periods that achieved some form of progress towards equality. As more people are becoming aware of worldwide inequality issues, Piketty reminds us that there has been past progress, and the future is up to us.

Mill's volume was published in 1861 as an argument favoring this form of governance. Mill covers what forms of government work best, including when representative government is applicable and when not. He details appropriate functions of representative bodies and warns of problems to avoid. He distinguishes between true and false democracy. Other areas covered include how voting is carried out, the role of a second chamber in Parliament, and how an executive branch might function. (Summary by Bill Boerst)

Conspiracy theories, and particularly the belief that elements of the world are secretly controlled by individuals or groups, have been around for as long as people have lived in groups. Perhaps that’s inevitable - after all, those who are excluded from power are very likely to be inclined to see their position not as an outcome of their own choices or situation but because of the secret machinations of shadowy groups.
One topic that has been a constant in Internet debates is the group known as the Bohemian Club. Founded in 1872 in San Francisco, this began as a club for journalists with an interest in the arts, but over the subsequent 150 years, it appears to have changed into a vehicle for the annual conclave of some of the most wealthy and powerful men on the planet. Each year, hundreds of men gather in a luxurious camp known as Bohemian Grove in a remote forest in California to do something.
Just what it is they do is a secret, which has inevitably led to some intense speculation. Is it no more than a fun-filled frolic where the super-rich and powerful can go to escape their cares for a few days, or is it something more sinister, a cabal in which secret decisions are made that affect everybody else? Finding out about the Bohemian Club and the annual gatherings at Bohemian Grove isn’t easy. Most of those invited to join this exclusive club remain members until they die, meaning there are no disaffected former members willing to talk about what goes on there. Current members are unwilling to talk about the club or its activities.
It’s this secrecy that has led to some bizarre speculation about just what it is that happens in Bohemian Grove every summer. Coming up with answers is no easy feat, as the group takes its secrecy seriously and members have the wealth and power to make sure the club’s business stays secret.
