Summary

In "The Civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy," Jacob Burckhardt presents a seminal exploration of the cultural, artistic, and intellectual revolution that marked the Italian Renaissance. Written with a distinctive narrative style that merges meticulous historical analysis with vivid, evocative prose, Burckhardt delves into the nuanced interplay between individuals and the epoch's transformative zeitgeist. He deftly examines diverse themes such as humanism, the emergence of secularism, and the flourishing of the arts, situating Italy as a crucible of innovation and change during the 14th to 16th centuries. Jacob Burckhardt, a Swiss historian whose scholarship is steeped in the philosophy of history, was profoundly influenced by the cultural dynamics of his own era. Living in the 19th century, Burckhardt sought to understand how the Renaissance laid the foundation for modernity, reflecting on how individual expression and civic engagement shaped society. His background in classical studies and art history provided him with a unique lens through which to scrutinize the profound intellectual departures of the Renaissance period. This text is indispensable for readers interested in art history, cultural studies, and the evolution of Western thought. Burckhardt's insights remain relevant, as they invite contemporary audiences to reflect on the complexities and legacies of Renaissance civilization. Engaging and illuminating, Burckhardt's work is a timeless guide that bridges past and present.

In the over 100 years since it sank on its maiden voyage, the Titanic has been the subject of endless fascination, as evidenced by the efforts to find its final resting spot, the museums full of its objects, and the countless books, documentaries, and movies made about the doomed ocean liner. Thanks to the dramatization of the Titanic’s sinking and the undying interest in the story, millions of people are familiar with various aspects of the ship’s demise, and the nearly 1,500 people who died in the North Atlantic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. The sinking of the ship is still nearly as controversial now as it was over 100 years ago, and the drama is just as compelling.
In the century since the Titanic sank, public interest in the ship and its history has waxed and waned on a regular basis. There was a flurry of activity right after it went down, as people tried to wrap their minds around what happened, but the World Wars pushed attention elsewhere. Then, during the 1950s, scientists had the time and money to become interested in it again. While there were numerous attempts to find that ship during the 1970s, the mighty ship still kept her secrets, her dead and their possessions safely at the bottom of the sea, where only strange creature comfortable in the depths could disturb them.
As it turned out, the most famous wreck in the world would not be located until 1985, over 70 years after the ship sank that fateful April night. The discovery ignited a new flurry of interest in Titanic, including an interest in what the wreck still held, who those items belonged, to and what should be done with them. The 1997 blockbuster movie about the ship only stirred up more interest and controversy, both of which continue to this day.

Imagine sitting with an esteemed writer on his or her front porch somewhere in the world and swapping life stories. Dr. Wayne Flynt got the opportunity to do just this with Nelle Harper Lee. In a friendship that blossomed over a dozen years starting when Lee relocated back to Alabama after having had a stroke, Flynt and his wife Dartie became regular visitors at the assisted living facility that was Lee's new home. And there the conversation began, with an invitation to "Come in, sit down, and stay a while."

The stories exchanged ranged widely over the topics of Alabama history, Alabama folklore, family genealogy, and American literature, of course. Wayne and his wife were often joined by Alice Lee, the oldest Lee sister, a living encyclopedia on the subject of family genealogy, and middle sister Louise Lee Conner.

The hours spent visiting, in intimate closeness, are still cherished by Wayne Flynt. They yielded revelations large and small, which have been shaped into Afternoons with Harper Lee. Part memoir, part biography, this book offers a unique window into the life and mind and preoccupations of one of America's best-loved writers. Flynt and Harper Lee and her sisters learned a great deal from each other, and though this is not a history book, their shared interest in Alabama and its history made this extraordinary work possible.

A Shadowing of Angels is now available as an audiobook from Author's Republic. The book unfolds in the murky and dangerous world of covert intelligence collection and the 'Circuit; the name given by private military contractors to UK-based security companies. Set in 2016 this adrenaline-fueled spy-based adventure novel highlights the ongoing struggle against the evil of the Islamic State. Samantha Holloway is a highly trained intelligence operative and special forces officer working on the Circuit when an American hostage is snatched by ISIS in Iraq. Sam's team is contracted to launch a search and rescue mission. The search starts in London starts amongst radical Islamist organisations and reaches its climax in the very heart of darkness- the Iraqi town of Mosul, then under the demonic control of Daesh. A Shadowing of Angels is the first book of the Sam Holloway Trilogy. All three interlinked novels are all based against a factual historical backdrop. The writer had drawn on his own experiences of working as an intelligence officer in both Iraq and Afghanistan to craft the story. The narrator was there with him.***** Brilliant, Delaney's background nails the authenticity once again...'***** A cracking listen that had me hooked to the end...'***** Realistic that races off the page. Perfect for fans of Tom Clancy and Brad Thor.'***** Wow!! What a cracking book!!!***** This is essentially a ‘rattling good yarn’, a highly topical good vs evil adventure story, fast-paced and packed with incident, that grips the reader’s attention from the start through to the tense and violent climax.***** Gives a great insight into the world of intelligence-based operations in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Moves at breakneck speed from the UK to the Middle East, ***** A real page-turner!***** Delaney is a tour de force! I literally couldn't put this book down. He makes the complex murky world of counterintelligence infinitely entertaining. Loved it!
