Sinopse

When he was awarded an honorary degree in civil law at Newcastle University in 1967, Dr Martin Luther King gave an electrifying extemporaneous address, speaking without notes, in which he said: ‘There are three urgent and indeed great problems that we face today…That is the problem of racism, the problem of poverty and the problem of war.’As part of a fifty year anniversary and celebration, this anthology gathers poets from both sides of the Atlantic to address the challenges set out by Dr King. It’s a shock to think how little has changed, and that Martin Luther King could well be speaking right here, right now. In the spirit of Dr King and his work as a humanitarian and activist, this anthology brings together poems that offer powerful testimonies to the urgent issues Dr King defines and represents the polyphony of voices that speak in resistance to our continuing problems of racism, poverty and war.Featuring poems by Claudia Rankine, Grace Nichols, Yusef Komunyakaa, Moniza Alvi, Rita Dove, Daljit Nagra, Imtiaz Dharker, Fred D’Aguiar, Oliver de la Paz, Rowan Ricardo Phillips, John Agard, Patricia Smith, Jericho Brown, Toi Derricotte, Vahni Capildeo, Carl Phillips, Sarah Howe, Elizabeth Alexander, Ishion Hutchinson, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Marilyn Nelson, Mimi Khalvati, Nikki Giovanni, Robert Pinsky, Bernardine Evaristo, Vidyan Ravinthiran, Major Jackson, Tim Seibles, Choman Hardi, Benjamin Zephaniah, Shazea Quraishi, E. A collection of twenty-five poems on faith and ocd. Intrusive thoughts come up with what seems like a million flashing warning lights like those coming up all at once on a car's faulty dashboard. None of them make sense but they all feel so real, so personal, yet so alien to the person's heart, nature and beliefs. Suffering in silence, unable to talk as it feels like no one will understand, or worse, that they will judge harshly... anxiety levels soar... isolation follows, even from God, because "He knows". The thing is, He does know. Brains glitch, they can be like the car's faulty dashboard. They are not our mind, and they are not our heart. The battle is very real and the steps taken to overcome must be acknowledged, but the journey was never meant to be travelled alone. These few poems are a prayer voyage towards restored intimacy in the courts of Grace and in the safety of one's hiding place, tightly tucked against His heart, positioned for recovery.

When the British Government turn down a revolutionary weapons system in favour of the new Euro fighter they don't realise the wrath their decision will cause. The only radar system capable of detecting the new Thor's Hammer is the experimental Spyglass system being transported on a cruise liner commanded by ex-Navy Captain Eric Swanson. Martin Westfarland, designer of Thor's Hammer, decides to teach the British Government a lesson by sinking the liner and destroying Spyglass before passing Thor's Hammer onto the Iraqis who plan to use it to deliver a deadly bio-weapon to the west. Through a series of action-filled events, Swanson and Squadron Leader Gerry Denton are brought together to thwart the terrorist attack, while the SAS are assigned to locate and destroy the chemical lab in the Syrian Desert, which created the virus. Unfortunately the virus has already been loaded onto Thor's Hammer. Thus it falls to Denton to fly the Typhoon Euro fighter against the faster and stealthier Thor's Hammer before it can deliver its deadly payload.

Rehema Njambi unpacks identity, faith, womanhood and – above all – agency, in poems partly inspired by conversations with the Black, mostly African, women around her.

Imbued with quiet resistance to patriarchal societies, Njambi's debut collection is an ode to the women who have raised her, and their strength and their ability to hold, sustain, and be rooted in their faith. The poems resound with their idea of home, and belonging they wish to pass on to their daughters.
    GHOSTS IN THIS HOUSE
There were footsteps in the dark all night,

almost every night, and we were scared —

but we didn't say a thing.
She called us to prayer in the morning, every morning.

With our small hands and smaller faith
we asked the Lord for protection —

but He didn't say a thing.

Written during the profound global upheaval between 2019 and 2023, In Water Not Blood braids ancient traditions of nature-based spirituality, dreaming, song and prayer with the realities and anxieties of modern life. These poems are as much soft and spiritual as they are rage-filled and disillusioned. A powerful account of the author's journey to reclaim her connection to her ancestors and to the Earth. In Water Not Blood is a celebration of the healing power of nature and art and is an urgent cry for collective transformation.
