Summary

When an emotionally bruised historian is summoned to a forgotten castle buried in the Black Forest, he believes it's for a routine restoration project. What he finds is a ruin untouched by time—its rooms preserved, its furniture undisturbed, and its secrets sealed behind silence and shadows.

Drawn to the faded grandeur and eerie quiet, he begins reconstructing the estate’s lost legacy. Yet, as old journals resurface and strange symbols echo across the stone halls, he starts to doubt what he’s remembering—and what he’s forgetting. A woman’s lullaby echoes where no voice should remain. A spiral mark appears in places no hand has touched.

As the archivist pieces together the tragic fall of a reclusive family and their obsession with silence, the castle begins to rewrite his own memories. Why does he dream of rooms he hasn't entered? Who sent the invitation sealed in wax? And why does the name Marten always linger just out of reach?

In this atmospheric Gothic thriller of decayed beauty and haunted legacies, nothing is stable—not time, not memory, not even the truth. Some places were never meant to be archived.

What happens when you dig too deep into a past that remembers you back?

A psychopathic female fugitive provokes a mother’s vengeance in this terrifying thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of Gone South and Boy’s Life.   Back in the 1960s, Mary Terrell shot and killed a man. A former member of the fanatical Storm Front Brigade—a splinter group of the notorious Weathermen—Terrell has stayed one step ahead of the FBI for decades. Living with numerous identities and menial jobs, Terrell’s only constants in life have been LSD, psychotic delusions of motherhood, and murderous rage. The sixties are long gone, but Mary is still out there. Now, provoked by a message she reads in Rolling Stone, she’s convinced that the surviving leader of her old band of radicals wants to build a life with her. So one night, Mary sneaks into the maternity ward of an Atlanta hospital. Laura Clayborne has a successful career and now, a newborn baby. She’s the type of person who is sensitive to suffering and injustice. But the kidnapping of her infant son has brought out a white-hot fury. She’s not going to sit and wait while the FBI investigates. She’s going after Mary herself—headlong and relentless—on a twisting and violent cross-country pursuit to get her child back. But to track a madwoman, Laura will have to think like one . . . WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN meets THE VEGETARIAN in this chilly and chilling epistolary novel of four characters locked in a frightening cycle of vengeance and comeuppance. Mira is a desperate young woman, hired by a wealthy single mother to tutor her lonesome son, Yuchan. But Mira is not who she presents herself to be; she is haunted by the death of her own family and motivated by the dark pulse of vengeance. Yuchan was cruel to Mira’s mother. A kind of cruelty she can’t ever forgive.   And then there is Jiwon, the boy’s mother, a bad mother, Mira thinks—or so Jiwon tells herself she must not be.   But as Mira spends more time in the family’s sprawling home, she begins to suspect Yuchan is not the culprit she’s after. Someone else in the family has been pulling the strings. Someone with a deviant plan she can’t begin to imagine.   Structured around four different letters and journal entries: Mira's, Jiwon's reply, Yuchan's younger brother's diary entry and, finally, Mira's own written recollection. Each new section brings us deeper into a web of cruelty, consequence, and closer to the truth.
