“Moore traces the contours of shadow without ever letting us forget the transformative power of light.” —Kaethe Schwehn, author of The Rending and the Nest
In this unique and honest coming-of-age story, young artist Molly Fisher predicts another boring summer at her family cabin on Cloud Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, until, weeks before her sixteenth birthday, a boating accident almost causes her little brother's death. Sam is in a coma, and Molly's family, unraveled by tragedy, blames her. Overcome with grief and guilt, Molly befriends a newcomer to the lake, Zoe Novato, a waterskiing champion whose frank interest both unsettles and delights Molly. From best friends, the unthinkable happens: Molly falls in love with Zoe.  In the midst of escalating family tragedy, Molly's journey of discovery unexpectedly becomes a path of redemption for both her parents, bringing their family from lost to found. The transcendent ending shows the power of young love to heal old wounds and allow a deeper forgiveness. Qualities of Light explores the budding of unexpected romance in the face of family tragedy, the forging of a new relationship between a daughter and her gifted, difficult parents, and an adolescent girl's confrontation with her own qualities of light and darkness.

Thom Baron has been struggling with social anxiety his entire life. He's taken the medications, gone to the therapists, followed the programs, and concluded his best life is a solitary one. When he comes across a dog in obvious need at his local market, it rekindles the desire to have some company around. It may come with a dishevelled coat, a notched ear, and a refusal to respond to anything but its given name "Ugly," but it could still be a friend.
However, Thom's new fur buddy has no such need to keep to itself and immediately befriends the man Thom has secretly coveted since he moved in -- Justin, Thom's gorgeous, bright-eyed neighbour. No matter how Thom tries to evade the man, the dog keeps drawing them back into each other's lives, and it doesn't take Thom long to recognize it's simply pursuing the demands of Thom's own heart. Society in the city is split between the Upper and the Lower. Elis Scott was an orphaned brat from the Lower, but managed to crawl and fight his way out with the help of a minor slum lord turned entrepreneur. Now Elis is one of Mullen's men, helping those who cannot take their problems to the authorities.

Despite finding his feet, Elis has a secret which threatens all he's achieved. Not only is he attracted to men, something he's tried to repress for years, but he also detests his need to submit. Suppressing his desires, denying who he is, manifests in rage he struggles to control. But his self-denial is rendered pointless when he meets Lord Victor Latham.

Having recently inherited his title after the death of his father, Latham is coerced by his estranged uncle to hire Elis to protect him from possible fortune hunters. Despite his blindness, Latham is stubborn and fiercely independent and rails against the necessity of being guarded. Yet when Elis confides his suspicions about his uncle's true motives, Latham agrees to let Elis look into the matter.

The friction between Elis and Latham is more than their equally obstinate personalities rubbing against one another. It brings out Latham's dominant tendencies, to show Elis how it could be if he gave into his desires. However, old family secrets, outside threats, and Elis's fear of his growing feelings keep them from exploring the true extent of their attraction.
