Beschreibung

"Smart Wearables" delivers a comprehensive exploration of how wearable devices are becoming sophisticated extensions of our mobile technology ecosystem. The book navigates the evolution from basic fitness trackers to advanced health monitoring systems, focusing on three critical aspects: seamless data synchronization, artificial intelligence integration, and user interface design. Through real-world case studies and technical analyses, it reveals how these technologies are fundamentally changing human-computer interaction.

The text skillfully balances technical depth with accessibility, examining practical challenges like battery optimization, wireless communication protocols, and data security. It draws from extensive industry research and development laboratories, incorporating insights from both major technology companies and innovative startups. Particularly valuable is its investigation of cross-device integration, showing how wearables function as extensions of smartphone capabilities rather than isolated devices.

Moving from foundational concepts to advanced applications, the book addresses crucial implementation considerations across healthcare, sports science, and user experience design. It provides developers, system architects, and technology professionals with actionable insights while maintaining a forward-looking perspective on emerging standards and protocols. The interdisciplinary approach, supported by detailed examples and clear illustrations, makes complex technical concepts accessible without sacrificing depth, offering readers a robust understanding of both current capabilities and future possibilities in wearable technology.

When Ashley Shew became a self-described "hard-of-hearing chemobrained amputee with Crohn's disease and tinnitus," there was no returning to "normal." Suddenly well-meaning people called her an "inspiration" while grocery shopping or viewed her as a needy recipient of technological wizardry. Most disabled people don't want what the abled assume they want—nor are they generally asked.

In vibrant prose, Shew shows how we can create better narratives and more accessible futures by drawing from the insights of the cross-disability community. To forge a more equitable world, Shew argues that we must eliminate "technoableism"—the harmful belief that technology is a "solution" for disability; that the disabled simply await being "fixed" by technological wizardry; that making society more accessible and equitable is somehow a lesser priority.

This badly needed introduction to disability expertise considers mobility devices, medical infrastructure, neurodivergence, and the relationship between disability and race. The future, Shew points out, is surely disabled—whether through changing climate, new diseases, or even through space travel. It's time we looked closely at how we all think about disability technologies and learn to envision disabilities not as liabilities, but as skill sets enabling all of us to navigate a challenging world.

In Ray Kurzweil's New York Times bestseller The Singularity is Near, the futurist and entrepreneur describes the Singularity, a likely future utterly different than anything we can imagine. The Singularity is triggered by the tremendous growth of human and computing intelligence that is an almost inevitable outcome of Moore's Law. Since the book's publication, the coming of the Singularity is now eagerly anticipated by many of the leading thinkers in Silicon Valley, from PayPal mastermind Peter Thiel to Google co-founder Larry Page. The formation of the Singularity University, and the huge popularity of the Singularity website kurzweilai.com, speak to the importance of this intellectual movement.
But what about the average person? How will the Singularity affect our daily lives—our jobs, our families, and our wealth?
Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World focuses on the implications of a future society faced with an abundance of human and artificial intelligence. James D. Miller, an economics professor and popular speaker on the Singularity, reveals how natural selection has been increasing human intelligence over the past few thousand years and speculates on how intelligence enhancements will shape civilization over the next forty years.
Miller considers several possible scenarios in this coming singularity: A merger of man and machine making society fantastically wealthy and nearly immortal Competition with billions of cheap AIs drive human wages to almost nothing while making investors rich Businesses rethink investment decisions to take into account an expected future period of intense creative destruction Inequality drops worldwide as technologies mitigate the cognitive cost of living in impoverished environments Drugs designed to fight Alzheimer's disease and keep soldiers alert on battlefields have the fortunate side effect of increasing all of their users' IQs, which, in turn, adds a percentage points to worldwide economic growth
Singularity Rising offers predictions about the economic implications for a future of widely expanding intelligence and practical career and investment advice on flourishing on the way to the Singularity.

Nikola Tesla was one of history’s greatest scientists, and though he is best known for his pioneering work with electricity, the fact that he is mostly remembered solely for that actually does a disservice to his legacy. Born a Serb in the Austrian Empire, Tesla came to the United States and worked in a laboratory for none other than the Wizard of Menlo Park, Thomas Edison.
Having established AC as an electrical supply system, Tesla became a global celebrity, and his devices and inventions fascinated people. Tesla tinkered with everything from X-rays to wireless communications and even attempted a primitive form of the radio. While Tesla was not able to successfully execute the devices and concepts he foresaw, his forward thinking in fields like wireless communication certainly proved prescient, and his futuristic devices and his later reputation for eccentricity helped create the “mad scientist” image that still remains a pop culture fixture. Tesla seemed to have come to grips with this aspect of his legacy late in life, noting, “The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up."
During World War I, in December 1915, Tesla gave an interview to The New York Times in which he claimed he was working on something entirely new, a weapon that would use electrical power to instantly destroy a distant target. He explained that this weapon was “so far developed that great destructive effects can be produced at any point on the globe, determined beforehand and with great accuracy.” Tesla called this new weapon the “Teleforce,” and he would continue working on this project for the rest of his life, but he consistently refused to give details of its operation. Many people believed it was impractical, but with Tesla, it was never possible to be entirely certain.
