Sinopse

The Victorians thought, wrote and preached much more about heaven than we do today. As the subject of death comes out of the closet after 120 years when it has been largely shunned and avoided, this book presents the views on the afterlife of a number of well-known Victorians, and others not so well known, in the belief that they may help us today as we seek to get over our fear of death and what lies beyond it and to rescue ourselves from its privatization and over-medicalization.

The Empathy Fix - Why Poverty...

Poverty is bad for everyone. Being at the sharp end of disadvantage is shameful, reduces brainpower, and hampers positive action. It increases crime, burdens healthcare systems and raises taxpayers' bills. With millions around the world struggling to make ends meet and increased socioeconomic uncertainty making poverty a more probable prospect for many more, tackling poverty has never been more urgent.

Yet, while the ultra-rich bask in the glory of superstar status, people in poverty are cast as second-rate citizens. Deeply engrained prejudice and punitive policies lead to vicious cycles of deprivation. Positive psychology that emphasises personal strengths can be empowering for some, but also feeds toxic narratives of failure and defeat. The flipside of taking credit for individual success is that the inability to achieve it is attributed to personal shortcomings.
The Empathy Fix exposes the realities of poverty and reveals why policies don't work. It is a radical rethink of current efforts to tackle poverty, what it means and how we break the cycle. Here, writer and researcher Keetie Roelen provides readers with the tools to relate to poverty, realise why current interventions often don't work, and to respond to the situation in a way that gives everyone a sense of dignity and agency.

Through empathy, we can all contribute to a more equal society.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and his ideology was disseminated through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay "Nature". Following this work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. considered to be America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence."Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first and then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays, Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, represent the core of his thinking. They include the well-known essays "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul", "Circles", "The Poet", and "Experience." Together with "Nature", these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for mankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul." Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist or pandeist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world."

He subsequently taught at St. Colman's, Fermoy before joining the newly established academic publishing house, Irish University Press in Dublin. When it closed seven years later, there was a period of unemployment before he set ip his own publishing house, Wolfhound Press. He lives in Portmarnock, County Dublin where he is married with three children.
The poems in this collection are new and old, and in essence are "attempts to delve into those personal and race memories that from time to time disturb our complacency, or that reflect some of the pleasure there is in remembering one's moments of wisdom amidst the decades of foolishness."
