Summary

This memoir shares poignant moments in the life of a girl born into an Evangelical Christian home where indoctrination ruled every part of her existence. It provides a view into the rise of Christian nationalism and Gen X while highlighting the necessity of sexual and emotional competence. Her brutally honest accounts pull you into her world of chaos on her pride-filled, painful journey of self-discovery

At fourteen, her recognition of biblical inconsistencies prompted her to seek a life she knew nothing about. After enduring several traumatic events before and after leaving her faith, she escaped into an unknown world. Like many others who were bound to such a life during the 80s and 90s, she took a walk on the wild side. However, this is not the story of a prodigal child who followed a destructive path just to realize she belonged back in her indoctrinated state. It is the gut-wrenching truth bomb of experiences that led her to find her own path based on her humanity, not on the delusion of a deity. She didn't want to tell her story with singularity by defining herself as the victim or hero. She shows the spectrum of who she is by revealing the victim, villain, damaged, healing, and strong-willed person she actually was. The truth is often misrepresented to fulfill the desire to be seen as blameless. She hopes that by the end of this book, you will recognize that she understands her value is in being human, not in being perfect.

This book is the story of a changing Scotland as it was heard and seen by the people of Scotland. We all may have our ideas about where we are headed as nation and a society, but none of us knows. That makes what lies ahead so fascinating. Just like what's gone before. JOHN MacKAY

John MacKay is one of Scotland's best known broadcasters. His career as a reporter, anchor and presenter has spanned from the Thatcher Years to the Independence Referendum and beyond. MacKay has been witness to the major stories in the country's recent past.
There have been the tragedies of Lockerbie, Dunblane and Clutha; sporting triumphs and tears; the opening of the new Scottish Parliament; the drama of parliamentary elections and referendums; interviews with Prime Ministers and First Ministers; and the death of Donald Dewar.
From being in a room with a grizzly bear to trying to calm an irate – and topless – Alex Salmond, MacKay's career has been nothing if not varied. Using archive scripts, interview transcripts, recollections and personal diaries, he tells the story of one of the most tumultuous periods in Scotland's peacetime history.

From New York Times bestselling author Helen Rappaport comes a superb and revealing biography of Mary Seacole that is testament to her remarkable achievements and corrective to the myths that have grown around her.
Raised in Jamaica, Mary Seacole first came to England in the 1850s after working in Panama. She wanted to volunteer as a nurse and aide during the Crimean War. When her services were rejected, she financed her own expedition to Balaclava, where her reputation for her nursing—and for her compassion—became almost legendary.
Popularly known as “Mother Seacole,” she was the most famous Black celebrity of her generation—an extraordinary achievement in Victorian Britain. She regularly mixed with illustrious royal and military patrons, and they, along with grateful war veterans, helped her recover financially when she faced bankruptcy. However, after her death in 1881, she was largely forgotten.
More recently, her profile has been revived and her reputation lionized, with a statue of her standing outside St. Thomas’s Hospital in London and her portrait—rediscovered by the author—now on display in the National Portrait Gallery.
This book is the fruit of almost twenty years of research and reveals the truth about Seacole’s personal life, her “rivalry” with Florence Nightingale, and other misconceptions.
Vivid and moving, In Search of Mary Seacole shows that reality is often more remarkable and more dramatic than the legend.

Nostradamus, a 16th century physician, astrologer, sage, and seer, is perhaps the most renowned clairvoyant in history, as he apparently forecasted numerous transformative affairs centuries ahead of his time. In one such prophesy, he referenced “a young child born of poor people from the depths of the West of Europe, who would go on to “seduce a great troop by his tongue,” which many now believe alluded to the rise of Adolf Hitler.
It’s safe to say that there have been countless prophets and seers throughout history, but only one Nostradamus (1503-1566). Nostradamus has become a pop culture fixture even among those who find nothing of note in his work, and he is a cult figure among those who pore through his prophecies to look for proof that he foresaw major world events centuries ahead of time.
While Nostradamus remains the most famous, a legendary prophet grew up further east during the 20th century. Known by millions of followers as the beloved Baba Vanga, she was a blind mystic often called the “Balkan Nostradamus.” Despite her extremely humble beginnings, minimal education, and the seemingly endless string of hardships she suffered in her early life, the resilient, insightful, and peerlessly intuitive Vanga achieved global fame and recognition with her otherworldly visions and frighteningly accurate prophecies, attracting scores of domestic and international visitors from all walks of life, ranging from fellow villagers to celebrities and foreign dignitaries who clung on to her every word. The loyalty of her fan base, many of whom continue to spread forth her predictions and invaluable pearls of wisdom over 20 years after her death, is a testament to her prowess, especially in the present, when skepticism and cynicism have become the norm.
