Summary

Fay Brunton was one of those stars who suddenly shine out on Broadway in full effulgence, and are almost as quickly darkened. Most people will remember her name, but I doubt if many could name the parts in which she appeared. But to those of us who knew her, she remains a vivid and lovely memory; she was so beautiful! And that was not all of it; beauty is not uncommon on Broadway: it was her great sweetness of nature that endeared her to us; her girlishness; her simplicity. She was not a great actress; her smile was her passport to popular favour.
My employer, Madame Storey, who knows everybody in the great world, had become acquainted with Fay, and through her I had met the girl. By degrees, I can hardly say how, Fay and I had become intimate friends. She brought colour and incident into my life. To a plain Jane like me, she was marvellous. I was the recipient of all her charming confidences—or nearly all; and as well as I could, I steered her with my advice amongst the pitfalls that beset a popular favourite. For one in the limelight she was incredibly ignorant of evil. And you could not bear to show her the ugly side of life.

After recording the last interview of a month-long media extravaganza orchestrated by the brass, NYPD Detectives Chiara Corelli and P. J. Parker are hoping for time out of the spotlight working cold cases and/or solving low profile murders. But the brutal murder of Alessandra Moreau, a singer on track to becoming a superstar, in the living room of New York State Senator Leigh Drayman, a trans woman, is anything but.

Besides Drayman, only Moreau's twin sister and her wife knew she was a trans woman, so Corelli and Parker focus their attention on three suspects—the agent/manager stealing from her, a man from her attorney's office who assaulted her, and H, a rejected lover who she fears.

And when they find thirteen trans women murdered in exactly the manner as Moreau in just over two years, their focus changes and they enlist the senator's help to get the NYPD to set up a task force.

With the murder of two more trans women in New York City, the killer seems to be taunting them. But they are no closer to finding him then they were after Moreau was murdered.

As they dig deeper into those early murders, they eliminate suspects and begin to focus on the one with motive, means, and opportunity.
