  Born to a wealthy and literary family, Seneca was brought to Rome as an infant and educated in rhetoric and philosophy, he pursued a senatorial career, survived exile on a charge of adultery, and was recalled to Rome to be tutor and chief advisor to the young Nero. For nearly a decade he was a co-ruler of the empire, accumulating extraordinary wealth and influence while navigating the lethal politics of the imperial court.  
  By the time he wrote De Otio, he was in his mid-sixties, increasingly marginalised as Nero's reign darkened, his retirement was both a philosophical ideal and a matter of survival. Three years later, Nero ordered him take his own life. He did so with the composure his philosophy demanded. 
  De Otio is Seneca's philosophical case for his own retirement. For Seneca, leisure is the active, joyful work of studying nature, nurturing the mind, and serving humanity from a place of quiet reflection.   This audiobook is divided into units.While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise French.  
  In Unit 1 you will hear French decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said. 
  Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native French speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language. 
  By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand French. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in French at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken French, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences. 
  In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

  Democratic values, student achievement, and effective citizenship are intrinsically linked. The research, however, is that students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, have few opportunities to practice democratic citizenship in secondary schools. Alongside current threats to democracy, this should concern us all: professional learning communities, teacher-leaders, parents, consultants, administrators, school districts, human rights activists, minority leadership, the justice system, local communities, university faculties, state education departments, and citizens in general. Democratic citizenship is a superordinate goal – a composite of communicative abilities, freedom with responsibility, inclusiveness, career preparation, community mindfulness, evidence-based thinking, collective ownership, distributed leadership, and support for those in need. Student leadership, including school research (their own school and others), not only benefits the school generally, but helps prepare high school students for freedom, responsibilities, and opportunities as democratic citizens. Such leadership has foundations: student-chosen teacher advisors, daily advisories, collaborative learning expertise, student-led assemblies, self-regulation, leadership credit courses, and virtual/personal connections with student leaders in other schools, districts, and countries.
