Beschreibung

Joke Mechanics explores the science and art of comedy by dissecting the underlying structures that make jokes effective across diverse cultures. It investigates why some jokes resonate universally while others fail, focusing on the core elements of joke construction, the psychology of humor appreciation, and the impact of cultural context. One intriguing fact is that despite surface-level differences, the book argues, fundamental cognitive and structural principles of joke construction remain remarkably consistent across cultures. Another highlight is the exploration of how cognitive biases and emotional states influence our appreciation of humor.

The book progresses through three key sections: examining joke structure, delving into the psychological underpinnings of humor perception, and investigating the cultural and linguistic factors that shape humor. This multifaceted approach, drawing from linguistics, psychology, and cultural studies, sets Joke Mechanics apart by offering a systematic, evidence-based framework for understanding and creating jokes. By deconstructing jokes into their basic components, the book provides valuable insights for anyone seeking to understand the mechanics of humor and its impact on communication and social interaction.

"We need more writers with bite. We have lived in the flatlands too long," writes John Barnie in one of his 'observations' ('Art in the Flatlands'). And bite he delivers.

Ranging across politics, history, culture, ecological disaster, the meaning of truth, poetry, what we mean by identity and more… Barnie shares a window onto the world that is both erudite and particular. Leaning towards pessimism in a darkening world, these observations are often provocative, not from any bullish desire to antagonise, but as the result of mining a rationalist line of thought with an honesty and consistency that is applied as much to the author as to his subjects. There is a clarity here that some may find uncomfortable, but the aim is always dialogue above agreement; intellectual engagement above cheap solutions and sentimentality.

Barnie asks us to think, consider and dig deeper, but most of all he asks that we "…live richly among our secondary self-created meanings, while recognising them for what they are. To face without flinching the nullity of the great void." ('Varieties of Meaning')
Tsunami Days is a vital collection of essays for those prepared to engage with its unflinching observations.

Germany's success in the Second World War was built upon its tank forces; however, many of its leading generals, with the notable exception of Heinz Guderian, are largely unknown. This biographical study of four German panzer army commanders serving on the Eastern Front is based upon their unpublished wartime letters to their wives. David Stahel offers a complete picture of the men conducting Hitler's war in the East, with an emphasis on the private fears and public pressures they operated under. He also illuminates their response to the criminal dimension of the war as well as their role as leading military commanders conducting large-scale operations. While the focus is on four of Germany's most important panzer generals—Guderian, Hoepner, Reinhardt, and Schmidt—the evidence from their private correspondence sheds new light on the broader institutional norms and cultural ethos of the Wehrmacht's Panzertruppe.

Gestapo Hunter explores the charmed life and exceptional career of Ted Sismore, widely considered one of the RAF's very best wartime navigators and leaders. A quiet, unassuming man who was nicknamed "Daisy" on account of his youthful complexion, Ted was one of only a handful of aircrew to complete a tour of operations in Blenheims in the summer of 1941. He flew in the daylight attack on Berlin, timed to coincide with an address being given by Hermann Göring, for which he received the first of several awards for gallantry and which was widely publicized. Identified by Basil Embry, the mercurial AOC of 2 Group, as something of a kindred spirit, Ted joined the Group's HQ staff, planning Operation Jericho, the famous attack on the prison at Amiens on February 18, 1944, and taking part on October 31 later that year in another "spectacular" to bomb the Gestapo HQ at Aarhus in Denmark. Raids on the SS and Gestapo became something of a specialty, Ted leading further pinpoint bombing attacks on "Shell House" in Copenhagen (Operation Carthage) and the Gestapo HQ at Odense. After the war, Ted teamed up with Mick Martin, the famous Dambuster, to break the flying record from London to Cape Town, in 1947, a journey of almost 7,000 miles. He later qualified as a pilot, flying Meteors, Javelins, and Canberras, retiring as an air commodore. He died in 2012.

In The Future Is Disabled, Leah Laksmi Piepzna-Samarasinha asks some provocative questions: What if, in the near future, the majority of people will be disabled—and what if that's not a bad thing? And what if disability justice and disabled wisdom are crucial to creating a future in which it's possible to survive fascism, climate change, and pandemics and to bring about liberation?

Building on the work of her game changing book Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice, Piepzna-Samarasinha writes about disability justice at the end of the world, documenting the many ways disabled people kept and are keeping each other—and the rest of the world—alive during Trump, fascism, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Other subjects include crip interdependence, care, and mutual aid in real life, disabled community building, and disabled art practice as survival and joy.

Written over the course of two years of disabled isolation during the pandemic, this is a book of love letters to other disabled QTBIPOC (and those concerned about disability justice, the care crisis, and surviving the apocalypse); honor songs for kin who are gone; recipes for survival; questions and real talk about care, organizing, disabled families, and kin networks and communities; and wild brown disabled femme joy in the face of death.
