  When running as the third-party Progressive (Bull Moose) candidate for president of the United States in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt recorded a number of campaign speeches. Represented here are all of the cylinder recordings he made for the Edison Company in August of 1912, including "The Progressive Covenant with the People," "The Right of the People to Rule," "The Farmer and the Businessman," and "Social and Industrial Justice." 
   
  Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919) was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Assuming the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies.

  The ADHD Consultation Hour ADHD...

  The first edition of the 'small ADHD consultation', published in 2014, was originally created to provide my patients with a quick overview of the broad field of ADHD symptoms in adults as summarised as possible. It was important to me to integrate accompanying disorders and therapeutic options such as medication and coaching strategies. It is not uncommon for the underlying ADHD symptoms to be masked by disorders that develop later (such as obsessive thinking, anxiety, panic attacks and addictions). Only abnormalities in childhood, such as dreaminess or motor restlessness with impulsiveness, allow conclusions to be drawn. Patients and friends were kind enough to embellish this book with their contributions, sketches, pictures and poems. The significantly expanded 3rd edition of the 'Little ADHD Consultation' is due to the increased needs and demands of my patients and the new findings concerning ADHD. New topics such as neurofeedback, medication overview, neurobiological aspects and autistic accompanying phenomena as well as legal aspects and cannabis medication have been included. I wish you many A-HA experiences with this expansion.

  A Strange Whim of the Sea - The...

  On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw (ASR-11) ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to get a towing line to the stranded submarine USS Flier (SS-250). The Flier was pulled free six days later, but another three weeks of salvage efforts failed to dislodge the Macaw. Then on February 12, the sea accomplished that task, nudging the ship into deeper water. 
   
   
   
  As night fell and the ship slowly sank, the twenty-two men on board sought refuge in the pilot house. By about 0230 Sunday, that compartment having flooded almost entirely, Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Five of the men, including Burton himself, died, as did three sailors from the base at Midway in a pair of unauthorized and effectively suicidal rescue attempts that morning. 
   
   
   
  This book traces the lives of the Macaw and her enigmatic captain, from birth on San Francisco Bay to death at Midway. Ultimately, for Paul Burton and the Macaw the real enemy was the sea, and in a deadly denouement told here in riveting detail, the sea won.   1811 German Coast Uprising and...

  As the issue of slavery roiled the country, few people became as controversial or consequential as Nat Turner, who was one of millions of slaves in the South before the Civil War but ultimately led the nation’s most notorious slave uprising. In August 1831, Turner led a rebellion that terrorized Virginia for several days, killing dozens of whites and freeing slaves as his band moved from plantation to plantation. The Richmond Enquirer reported, “A fanatic preacher by the name of Nat Turner (Gen. Nat Turner) who had been taught to read and write, and permitted to go about preaching in the country, was at the bottom of this infernal brigandage. He was artful, impudent and vindicative, without any cause or provocation, that could be assigned.” Even after the uprising was put down, Turner evaded capture for a few months, and after he was captured, his “confessions” were taken down and published before he was executed. Virginia would put a total of 56 slaves to death for the uprising. 
  	While Turner’s rebellion remains famous today, a far larger uprising took place a generation earlier. In January 1811, hundreds of slaves in Louisiana attempted to make a new beginning for themselves or die trying. Armed with muskets, cane knives, and axes, and wearing stolen United States militia uniforms, they set out to conquer the city of New Orleans. The goal was to establish a free republic where slavery was outlawed and blacks had control over their own lives. Understandably discontented with their status and no longer willing to accept it, they were ready to engage in extreme violence to win their freedom. Despite being unsuccessful in overthrowing the system, the German Coast Uprising showed a level of organization, leadership, and coordination unseen before by slaves in America, and it was totally unexpected by white owners and officials, which made it a precursor to its much more famous successor.
