Summary

In this book, detailed information has been given about our oceans, rivers, and lakes, and a brief description of life-giving trees has been given. After reading this book and understanding the role these natural resources play in our lives, we may understand their importance. In Mahatma Buddha’s words, "The trees are magical beings in this world. They provide shade to all, even to those who come with axes to cut them down.”
The oceans, rivers, lakes, and trees are very important to us and our environment as they provide us with fresh and clean water and food. Rivers flow from several origins. These origins can be lakes and mountains. Almost every river meets another river or ocean at the end of its journey. The river which meets the main river is called the tributary. The area through which a river passes is called its catchment area. To maintain the level of the river and its flowing speed, it is necessary to make sure that we don’t exploit the catchment area.
It is often said that our world resides in a small seed. In the same way, a small seed has a whole tree inside it. These trees and plants are our first mothers. Their leaves, flowers, roots, fruits, and seeds are a part of our daily diet and provide us with nutrition. Without these trees, our world is incomplete. They provide us not only with food but also with oxygen. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

Experts agree on the value of genetic testing when there is a family history of disease, or if the patient has an illness frequently caused by a mutation. Knowing the disease mutation lets family members find out if they have it too and need preventive care. The book explains that doctors can order tests with genetic counseling at relatively low cost and how this will help them prescribe preventive actions, make earlier diagnoses, and get better outcomes. The book's genetic discussions also delve into the implications of broad-based genetic screening without a family history. Policymakers are considering the benefits and drawbacks of this approach and I present both sides of this debate.

While working on this book I uncovered a family secret hidden for over one hundred years. Family lore had it that a heavy dressmaker's mirror fell on and killed my uncle when he was four. But the death certificate told a different story—his true cause of death was heart failure. My grandparents fabricated the accident to protect their surviving children's marriage prospects. Long before the discovery of DNA, my grandparents intuited and feared James Watson's message, "We used to think that our fate was in our stars, but now we know that, in large measure, our fate is in our genes." The book suggests genetic testing and associated medical intervention can change our fates.

“A lovely balance of memoir, travelogue and olive-growing how-to . . . Some of her adventures are quite funny.” —Publishers Weekly In this memoir, the author of The Olive Farm returns to the ten-acre property for which she and her fiancé scraped together their savings to buy—just back from their wedding on a tiny Polynesian island, loaded down with luggage and a large hand-painted didgeridoo. As Carol and Michel settle in as husband and wife, they experience the glamor of southern France at dinner parties in the company of aristocrats and at the world-renowned Cannes film festival, as well as the dirt-caked, sun-baked life of farmers—especially after their gardener heads to Algiers to arrange his youngest son’s wedding. For Carol, though, what matters most is that her longtime dream of motherhood finally promises to come true—and over the course of The Olive Season, she shares the story of her hopes and fears as she anticipates another kind of growth and nurturing. Alternately entertaining and emotionally poignant, this memoir is a rich portrait of love, longing, and the constant uncertainties of the cycle of life.

The epic, page-turning history of how a group of physicists toppled the Newtonian universe in the early decades of the twentieth century
The epic true story of how a global team of physics luminaries—Einstein, Curie, Schrödinger, and more—toppled the Newtonian universe amid the turmoil of two World Wars

There may never be another era of science like the first half of the twentieth century, when many of the most important physicists ever to live—Marie Curie, Max Planck, Wolfgang Pauli, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Ernst Schrödinger, Albert Einstein, and others—came together to uncover the quantum world: a concept so outrageous and shocking, so contrary to traditional physics, that its own founders rebelled against it until the equations held up and fundamentally changed our understanding of reality.

In cinematic, page-turning chapters, Tobias Hürter takes us back to this uniquely momentous and harrowing time, when war and revolution upended the lives of his renegade scientists. As they crisscross Europe, Hürter reveals these brilliant thinkers anew, as friends and enemies, lovers and loners, and indeed, men and women just like us. Hürter compellingly casts quantum mechanics as a concept Too Big for a Single Mind—and its birth as a testament to the boundless potential of genius in collaboration.
