He gives her away at her wedding but does not lose her. ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~ If I conclude that Alicia’s leaving us was the biggest shock of my life, I would have to say that the second biggest shock was the unveiling of Roxanne’s secret. We spent several weeks of moving our belongings out of the inner city apartment to Campbell, and after our final trip, I was unpacking and found a DVD on the floor. I picked it up to see that it was one of those porn videos with an attractive girl nearly nude on the front cover and couples and even groups in various sexual positions on the back. To be more politically correct nowadays, this would be called an “adult video” rather than porn. Of course, I knew that this was not mine and that it had to belong to Roxanne. The very next day I approached her with the DVD in my hand and said, “I believe this belongs to you.” “Dad!” she exclaimed. “Where did you find that?” “I found it on the floor. You must have dropped it while unpacking. Don’t worry, sweetheart, I accept you as an adult now, and just because I am a pastor doesn’t mean that I am so naïve as to not know that this kind of stuff is rather commonplace nowadays,” I said to her. “Okay, Dad,” she said. “Thank you for finding it and understanding, but it’s not that simple.” “What do you mean by that?” I asked. “Well, Dad,” she responded. “I knew it was bound to come out eventually so here it is: I may not be on the cover but I am performing in that video. This is one of my earliest ones. The director suggested I always review my performances and look for ways to improve. I followed his advice and I guess that’s how I came to be a so-called ‘star’ and it didn’t take long before I was the cover girl for all my videos.” Roxanne then proceeded to elaborate on the fact that suddenly became the second biggest shock of my life. My daughter, my sweet, adorable daughter that I as a single parent had been raising for over ten years, owned up to me that she had been a porn star for well over two years and was still going strong at it. “So now you know, Dad,” she said with a slight smile, “and that’s how I was able to save up enough cash to make the down payment on our beautiful new home. Don’t feel bad about it, Dad. It’s honest money and it is a safe profession. No longer does porn come out of someone’s basement or garage. The studios are clean, legal and run by professionals, and all of us actors are cleared for venereal diseases, including AIDS. My colleagues are clean, honest and respectable people.” I then said to her, “Honey, I trust your judgment but I can’t help but be concerned. It’s an area I know so little about. What happens when people you know recognize you in a video?” “First of all, Dad,” she answered, “when they’re shooting a scene of me, I wear my hallmark platinum blond wig and with my artificial eyelashes and makeup, I look like a totally different person.” She then pointed out to me one of the still shot of her on the collage of scenes on the back of the video I had found, and sure enough, there was a scene with a platinum blond woman having sex with two men at once, and it certainly did not look like my Roxanne. “Well, Dad, about your not knowing much about this porn business as you say, I have an idea,” she said. “Here’s my plan. I go to the Los Angeles area about once a month for a shooting of a video. You could go with me, meet the staff and see how things are done.”
