Beschreibung

"The History of King George the Third" in 4 volumes are a historical account written by Horace Walpole that comprises the first twelve years of the reign of George III. George III (c. 1738-1820) was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 1760 until the union of the two countries in 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death in 1820. He was a monarch of the House of Hanover, but unlike his two predecessors, he was born in Great Britain, spoke English as his first language, and never visited Hanover. George's life and reign, which were longer than those of any of his predecessors, were marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms, much of the rest of Europe, and places farther afield in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Early in his reign, Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, becoming the dominant European power in North America and India. However, many of Britain's American colonies were soon lost in the American War of Independence. Further wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France from 1793 concluded in the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

"He's the toughest street fighter alive." Freddie ForemanPicture a man, he’s tall, not excessively so, yet as wide as he is high. Well, there you have him! The prototypical face taken from the terraces of an ’80s football fan’s rolled-up newspaper cosh; a poster-boy of malevolence left over from Thatcher’s post-punk Britain.Stormin’ Norman’s his name and when this storm is erupting, he’s like a force-nine gale fused with a hurricane. In his heyday, Norman saw off a plethora of gangland minders, and with his own style of hands-on education, taught Glasgow’s prolific hitman, Billy McPhee, the laws of the Guv’nor’s land. He’s the Godfather of Aylesbury, former British Bare-Knuckle Champion, and undefeated European Boxing Federation ‘Guv’nor’. The loveable lunatic with the heart of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Yes, this my accidental friends, is the new Guv’nor. He is the man who rebuked many a heathen, but was also everyone’s friend, and for all the right reasons. From ordinary housewife to Canoe Widow, Panama and prison.

After years of remaining silent, Anne Darwin finally reveals the truth behind the crime that tore her family apart.

When Anne Darwin told the world and her family that her husband, John, had disappeared while canoeing in the North Sea, her life changed forever.

She had just lied to the police, the press, her friends and neighbours, insurance companies and her own sons.

While her husband hid in a bedsit in their rental house next door, Anne had to face the music. She claimed the life insurance payouts, endured the police questioning, accepted the consolations and left the country she loved to start her life again.

But why, when she had been perfectly happy with her lifestyle, knowing her actions would hurt those she held most dear, did she do it?

Now, for the first time, Anne opens up about an extraordinary chain of events: how she became involved in her husband's hare-brained scheme, her life and marriage, her harrowing time behind bars, and the runaway train of deceit and guilt that followed her plan to defraud insurance companies with the aid of a canoe.

Anne Darwin has done much to repair her relationship with her two sons, and is now a big part of their lives, and the lives of her four grandchildren. She works for an animal charity and lives alone in York. Her co-author is David Leigh, an award-winning journalist, who developed a remarkable relationship with Anne after uncovering her crime in Panama. He won the London Press Club's Scoop Of The Year Award and the National Association of Press Agencies news story of the year for his reporting on John Darwin Canoe Man.

Giving My All captures the journey of Earl Martin Phalen as he navigates family, self-identity and purpose. As a black boy adopted into a large, loving Irish Catholic family at age two, Earl discovered at a young age that he was meant to stand out. Yet whether it was on the basketball court or early in his career as a young and ambitious “edupreneur,” Earl encountered opportunities that required him to give his all, but often found himself holding back. Earl faced both subtle and overt racism in his predominantly white neighborhoods, but with the love and unrelenting support of his family, he was able to overcome much—facing it most directly and intentionally for the first time when he arrived on Yale campus as a young athlete scholar. While at Yale, Earl gained a new sense of pride and purpose as he connected with his black and African American heritage. This would continue throughout his studies and into graduate school at Harvard Law, where his calling to education—particularly that of black and brown children—came to life. Earl has dedicated his life to improving the access poor, black and brown children have to quality education and opportunities.

Since he was a child in the 1950s watching Vampires and Meteors operating from RAF Turnhouse, Jim Walls wanted to fly aircraft, he just never envisaged that his flying career would be spent in the back seat as opposed to the front. Jim guides listeners through his forty-year RAF career that started as a Boy Entrant at RAF Cosford, then as an air radar tradesman, before specializing as an air electronics operator (AEOp) in the Nimrod MR1, and later as an air electronics officer (AEO) who flew in Nimrod R1s and Vulcan B2s.

With detailed insight into the world of radar, electronic countermeasures, and signals intelligence, Jim highlights the role they played in warfare for numerous operations during the Cold War as well as the Falklands campaign, First Gulf War, and Bosnian War. As well as focusing on his career, Jim gives his viewpoint on matters such as Operation Black Buck and the reduced war-fighting capability of the Vulcan as it neared retirement.

This fascinating book showcases the vital role that AEOs held and the importance of radar and electronic warfare in the fight against enemy forces. It is also a tribute to the much-loved Cold War icons, the Nimrod and the Vulcan. This book will appeal to Cold War enthusiasts and fans of the iconic jets of that era.
